Backpacking in Qalandiya International
👌 Worth visitingfestival ranked #9
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Qalandiya International is not for people who need a single main stage, a tight schedule, and Instagram-ready comfort on tap. It’s for backpackers who like to chase ideas on foot. The festival runs across Palestine, anchored around Qalandiya (between Ramallah and Jerusalem in the central West Bank) and spilling into cities like Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and beyond. It’s an art and culture biennale more than a music festival: exhibitions in old houses, political art in warehouses, talks, films, occasional live music, usually over a couple of weeks. The crowd skews artists, students, and curious locals. It’s worth it if you want to walk, think, and argue about what you’ve just seen, not just dance and forget.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  1. Site-specific performances in everyday spaces — Plays, dances and sound pieces staged in rooftops, markets, abandoned buildings and even near checkpoints. It’s not just theatre; it’s art that interrupts daily life and forces you to see familiar places differently. Intense, political and often impossible to forget.
  2. Multidisciplinary, experimental program — You’ll find everything from intimate acoustic sets and experimental electronic shows to movement pieces and short films. The mix of traditional Palestinian forms and avant-garde work keeps the vibe unpredictable and exciting, and most venues are small enough that performances feel personal rather than packaged.

  3. Community workshops and participatory projects — Hands-on stuff: zine making, oral-history sessions, poetry slams and collective mural painting. These aren’t just spectator events — they invite you to make, talk and connect with locals. Great for budget travelers who want something real instead of just photos.
  4. Public art and street installations — Giant murals, pop-up sculptures and guerrilla art that transform streets into open galleries. It’s free to wander and discover, and the pieces often carry sharp political and cultural messages that give the festival its edge.
  5. Late-night pop-ups, jams and market stalls — After the official program, the city breeds its own mini-scene: rooftop jams, open-mic nights, cheap street food and stalls selling handmade crafts. It’s social, DIY and very low-cost — the best place to meet artists and locals without breaking the bank. (Personal favorite: the site-specific performances — they stick with you longer than any selfie.)

Don’t miss the falafel—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and bursting with flavor.

Festival stalls are a feast for the senses. Vendors often serve freshly squeezed juices, especially pomegranate and orange, perfect for quenching your thirst under the sun. Try the Arabic coffee—strong, aromatic, and served in small cups that invite you to linger and chat.
