Backpacking in Plage de Saint-Leu
👌 Worth visitingbeach ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Free parking along the seafront and a short walk to bakeries make Plage de Saint-Leu an easy first stop on the west coast. It sits in the west of Réunion, a short drive south of Saint-Paul. The sand is dark volcanic grit that burns bare feet by noon, and the shore is more pebbly lagoon edge than postcard strip. Behind the reef the water is calm and warm enough to snorkel over coral patches and small reef fish, while the breaks outside bring surfers to one of the island’s famous left-handers. Weekends fill with picnicking families and the smell of grilled sausages and charcoal. Hostels and guesthouses sit in the streets behind. Before you go, remember that sharks have led to swimming restrictions here, so check the flags and local signs before entering the water.

Ranked #8 beach in Réunion
Why Plage de Saint-Leu should be on your travel list

Plage de Saint-Leu earns its stops because the surf break at the town’s edge is one of the best known on the island, and watching the lineup from the rocks costs nothing. The lagoon behind the reef gives non-surfers something calm to do, with snorkeling over coral heads just off the shore when the rules allow swimming. The place also works as a pause on the western coast, between the sugar-cane slopes above and the beaches toward Saint-Gilles. Hang-gliders drift down from the heights behind town and land close to the sea, so the sky is part of the show. Evenings feel unhurried, with locals gathering on the front for picnics and a sunset beer, and travelers meeting over cheap bakery lunches. If you want a base that mixes waves, reef and a friendly atmosphere, this is it.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. The surf break: the long left-hand wave breaking over the reef is the reason surfers know the town. Watch from the rocks and the seawall, where you can follow each ride from takeoff to the final turn.
  2. Snorkeling in the lagoon: the sheltered water behind the reef holds coral and small tropical fish. Visit only when swimming is officially permitted, and stay inside the marked area.
  3. Paragliding landings: pilots launch from the slopes above the town and land near the shore. Seeing the colorful canopies come down beside the sea is a daily spectacle on clear days.
  4. Seafront picnics: families set up under the shade trees with grills and coolers, especially on weekends. Buy fresh bread and cheese from the nearby bakeries and join in.
  5. Sunset on the black sand: the dark volcanic shore faces the open ocean

  5. Sunset on the black sand: the dark volcanic shore faces the open ocean to the west, so the evening glow over the water is wide and unobstructed. Locals gather with drinks, and it is the easiest way to end the day.
Plage de Saint-Leu costs nothing for watching the surf, the paragliders and the sunset, so those three are the cheapest ways to fill your day.

The quieter option is the Les Colimaçons and Roches Noires hillside area just above the coast. Expect gîtes and family-run B&Bs at €50 to 90 a night, with sea views and cooler air, though you will want a car or a bus for evening trips. Paragliders and surfers often stay up here, so it is easy to meet people who know the local spots.

If you want a livelier beach scene, Boucan Canot and L’Hermitage in the next towns north have more hostels and bars, and are reachable by bus along the coast road. Book ahead in July, August and December.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Plage de Saint-Leu is generally safe, but the open ocean here deserves respect. Since the shark crisis of the 2010s, swimming and surfing outside the protected zones have been restricted along this coast, and local authorities post flags and notices. The lagoon zone and the supervised bathing areas are the places to swim, so check the flags before entering. Surfers use the famous left-hand wave at the Gouffre, which is for experienced riders only, with strong currents and shallow reef. Rays and sea urchins are present on rocky patches, so reef shoes help. The sun is intense year-round, especially at midday, so bring a hat and reapply sunscreen. Afternoon winds pick up. Leave nothing visible in cars at parking spots near the beach, as break-ins happen, and keep valuables with you on the sand.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Plage de Saint-Leu lies on Réunion’s west coast, about 35 to 45 minutes by car from Saint-Denis airport via the N1 expressway, or 25 minutes from Saint-Gilles. Buses of the Car Jaune network serve the town from Saint-Paul and Saint-Pierre for roughly €2 to 3 one way. Parking is easy near the seafront, and the beach is a short walk from the town center.
Swimming is best inside the lagoon and the supervised areas, because swimming and surfing in open water along this coast are restricted due to shark risk. Surfing is famous at the Gouffre, a reef break with a long left wave for experienced surfers, best from May to October. Snorkeling is possible in the calm lagoon, where you can see small reef fish, and rental of mask and fins costs about €5 to 10.
Yes, Plage de Saint-Leu is free to visit, with no entry fee for the sand or lagoon access. Public showers and toilets are available near the seafront, and street parking is mostly free. Costs come from extras such as snorkel gear at €5 to 10, surf lessons around €40 to 60, or a tandem paraglide from the nearby heights at about €90 to 100.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Plage de Saint-Leu looks best when you arrive early, before the black sand heats up and the weekend picnic crowds claim the shade. Most visitors overlook the paragliders landing near the shore, so look up between waves. I would bring sandals for the hot grit and check the swimming flags before getting wet.
