- Monumentul Ecaterinei Teodoroiu (Monument to Ecaterina Teodoroiu) — a striking local memorial to Romania’s WWI heroine. It’s not just a statue; it’s a focal point for local memory and makes a short, meaningful stop on a city walk.
- Teatrul Dramatic ”Elvira Godeanu” — the city’s historic theatre and a live-culture hub. Check the schedule: a low-cost play, concert or local performance gives a real taste of Târgu Jiu’s cultural life.
- Piața Centrală (the Central Market and market hall) — lively, practical and colorful: fresh fruit, local cheeses, cured meats, and small stalls selling crafts. Good for cheap meals, people-watching and practicing a bit of Romanian.
- Historic downtown streets and interwar architecture — wander the blocks off the main drag to find old merchant houses, civic buildings and quiet squares. It’s the best way to absorb everyday city character and spot lesser-known architectural quirks.
