Backpacking in Kigali Jazz Junction
👍 Recommendedfestival ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Kigali Jazz Junction is a monthly series of live jazz nights, not a single annual festival with camping and a fixed weekend. It takes place in Rwanda’s capital, with the main venue at Kigali Convention Centre and other Kigali stages used for the series. The program mixes jazz with Afrobeat, soul and Afro-fusion, with Rwandan artists alongside regional and international guests. Expect a polite, seated-and-standing crowd of young professionals, expats, students and diplomats, with a relaxed, well-run atmosphere and an evening finish. Each event is one night, and tickets are paid for in Rwandan francs. It is worth a night if you are already in Kigali and want a view of the city’s modern side. It suits music lovers and social travelers who like polished, low-key evenings. If you want a camping festival, rowdy dancing or a rural setting, look elsewhere.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #6 festival in Rwanda
What sets this place apart

Kigali Jazz Junction earns a place in a route because it gives you a social evening in a city where nightlife is orderly and early. The audience is local first, so you end up chatting with Kigali residents, musicians and people who work in the city’s growing creative scene. That is rarer than it sounds on a backpacker circuit built around gorillas and lakes. The Kigali Convention Centre, with its domed roof lit at night, is a landmark in its own right, and the series often draws East African acts you will not otherwise catch live. Cost matters too. A ticket is far cheaper than a European jazz night, and you can walk away with a full evening for a modest sum. Slot it into a few days in the capital, between the genocide memorial visits and the trip toward Lake Kivu or the national parks, as a lighter counterweight.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while celebrating the Kigali Jazz Junction

  1. Live sets at Kigali Convention Centre: the series’ best-known home is the domed hall on Kimihurura hill, with a proper stage, strong sound and a seated, attentive crowd.
  2. Rwandan jazz and Afro-fusion artists: local players blend traditional rhythms, drums and vocals with jazz arrangements, which is the clearest taste of Kigali’s current music scene.
  3. Regional and international guests: the program regularly brings in musicians from across Africa and beyond, so a night can span smooth jazz, soul and Afrobeat.
  4. The after-show crowd: the audience of residents, expats and students lingers over drinks, and conversation comes easily, even if you arrive alone.
  5. Kigali food and drink stalls: expect local beer such as Primus and Mutzig, plus brochettes and snacks, so you can eat without leaving the venue.

For a first visit, the live set at Kigali Convention Centre is the one to prioritize, since it shows the series at its most polished.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Kimihurura is the best area to stay for the Kigali Jazz Junction nights, because the venues, restaurants and bars sit within a short walk or a cheap moto ride. It is leafy, well lit and full of travelers, so walking back after dark feels comfortable and you will meet people at breakfast tables.
Nyarugenge, around the city center, suits you if you want the lowest prices and quick access to the main bus station. Streets are busy until late, and you can reach most live music spots by a short ride. Pick a place with a staffed front desk and a secure door.

Kacyiru and Kiyovu are quieter, residential districts with a calm, embassy-neighborhood feel. They suit solo travelers who want sleep after a late set, and moto taxis are easy to find at main junctions.
Remera, near the airport and the Amahoro Stadium, is a good fallback if central dorms are full. It has a lively local nightlife scene and is a short ride from the action.
Whichever area you choose, book a room that lets you check in late, and arrange your ride home before the music starts.

🍲 FoodWhat to Eat & Drink

Expect the food to center on the venue’s kitchen and nearby grills rather than a festival field. Kigali’s jazz nights usually come with a full restaurant menu, so you can sit down with a proper meal.
Go for brochettes, skewered goat or beef grilled over charcoal and served with fried plantain or chips. A plate of tilapia with a tomato salad is another local standard, often served whole and meant to be eaten with your hands. If the menu lists isombe (cassava leaves cooked with peanut paste) or ibihaza (pumpkin), order it as a side to taste something home-cooked.
For drinks, the local beers Primus and Mützig arrive in large 500 ml bottles and are made for sharing. Rwandan coffee and Ikivuguto (fermented milk) are worth a try if you want something non-alcoholic. Fresh passion fruit and tree tomato … read more 👉

Expect to order at your table and wait, since the kitchen works at an unhurried pace. Mobile money and cards are widely accepted in the bigger venues, but carry some Rwandan francs for moto rides and smaller stalls. Portions are generous, so splitting a plate works.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Kigali Jazz Junction rewards the traveler who arrives for the evening sets and stays past dark, when the heat drops and the crowd loosens up. I would book the first night rather than a later one, since the festival builds toward its busiest evenings and early nights leave room to find your bearings. Bring a light layer for the cool hours, and keep your plans for the following morning loose.
