Yes. Saint Martin is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to explore on your own: it is small, English works on both sides, and there is no border control between the French and Dutch halves.
Money is the bigger challenge, since dorm beds barely exist. Budget US$80 to 120 a night for a simple guesthouse room in
Grand Case or
Philipsburg. Minibuses between Philipsburg,
Marigot and Grand Case cost US$2 to 3 a ride, and lolo plates in Grand Case run about US$12 to 20. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, although many French-side prices are quoted in euros.
Three to five days is right for Saint Martin. That is long enough to see both sides without rushing, and nowhere on the island is more than about 45 minutes from anywhere else.
With 2 days, stay in
Grand Case and add
Orient Bay and
Loterie Farm. With 3 days, split your nights between
Philipsburg and
Marigot to add Fort Louis and a sunset at
Baie Rouge. With 5 days, you can also fit in the Pic Paradis hike, the 5 to 10 minute boat to
Pinel Island and the walk to Happy Bay. Beyond a week, most travelers start booking day trips to Anguilla or St. Barths.
Mostly, yes. In Saint Martin, shared minibuses run along the main road connecting
Philipsburg,
Marigot and
Grand Case from early morning into the evening, and they become sparse after dark.
Fares are US$2 to 3. Philipsburg to Marigot takes 30 to 45 minutes, and Marigot to Grand Case about 15 minutes. Taxis charge fixed zone fares: plan on about US$35 to 45 from the airport to Grand Case, and US$15 to 30 for short hops to
Loterie Farm,
Baie Rouge or the Pinel ferry at Cul-de-Sac. If you want to cover the west-end beaches in one go, a one-day rental at roughly US$40 to 60 is the cheaper option.
For most visitors, the essential stops in Saint Martin are
Grand Case,
Orient Bay and
Baie Rouge. They cover the island’s best food, its most famous beach and its best sunset.
Add
Fort Louis above
Marigot (a 10-minute climb to views of Anguilla) and
Loterie Farm for shaded forest trails and ziplines in the hills. On the Dutch side,
Philipsburg is worth half a day for the Front Street boardwalk and the
Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit. All of these fit into 3 to 4 days using minibuses at US$2 to 3 a ride, plus a couple of taxis.
If you only have a day or two in Saint Martin, you can skip
Pinel Island,
Pic Paradis and the Front Street shops in
Philipsburg without missing the island’s character.
Pinel’s calm water is lovely, but the taxi to Cul-de-Sac and the ferry take up half a day.
Orient Bay or
Grand Case Beach give you great swimming with no extra transfers. Pic Paradis needs a 1.5 to 2 hour round-trip hike, so
Loterie Farm alone gives you the forest in less time. Front Street is mostly duty-free jewelry and fills with cruise passengers between about 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you do go, limit it to an hour.
