Backpacking in Happy Beach
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people picture Happy Beach as some secret, boat-only cove you just stumble onto from the sea; in reality, the best way in is on your own two feet. Happy Beach sits on the French side of Saint Martin, just west of Friar’s Bay, tucked between low headlands and scrubby hills. The hike is short but it makes you earn the sand: a rough coastal path, loose rock underfoot, thorny brush scraping your calves, and short, punchy climbs that spike your heart rate. Views swing wide over the bay, with turquoise water on one side and dry, wind-bent trees on the other. It’s easy to reach the trailhead by bus or shared taxi to Friar’s Bay, then you walk from there, which already puts it ahead of more remote island trails. Compared to longer routes like Pic Paradis, Happy Beach is quicker, hotter, and more about that final, perfect swim than the mileage.

As you approach the beach, the anticipation builds. The moment you step onto the soft sand, the reward hits you like a wave: turquoise waters stretching endlessly, inviting you in. After a refreshing swim, there’s nothing quite like cracking open a cold beer from a local vendor, the sun warming your skin.

This hike fits seamlessly into a longer backpacking route, allowing you to explore more of the island while soaking in the natural beauty. Happy Beach isn’t just a destination; it’s a celebration of the journey itself.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Cliff-top Panorama — A short scramble up a rocky headland opens to a wide, postcard-ready view where you can see the turquoise Caribbean dropping into deeper blue; the combination of sheer cliffs and open ocean gives a cinematic vantage that most inland island walks don’t offer. Best early morning for cooler air and clear light.
  2. Hidden Snorkel Cove — Tucked off the main path is a tiny crescent beach with shallow, crystal water and exposed coral fingers at low tide; because you have to hike in, the cove stays quieter than the big beaches and the reef life is more visible from shore.
  3. Rocky Tide Pools — Along the shoreline the trail threads around rock flats where tide pools collect colorful anemones, small crabs and fish; it’s a hands-on bit of marine life discovery that feels like a natural

  4. Dry Coastal Flora and Wildlife — The scrubby, sun-baked vegetation (agave, low cacti and aromatic shrubs) creates a different island vibe than the palms—keep an eye out for resident lizards and the occasional iguana sunning on rocks, making the walk feel wilder and more intimate.
  5. Fishermen’s Shelters and Local Touches — Weathered stone huts, old fishing nets and the occasional handwritten sign remind you this is a working coastline as much as a scenic one; those small cultural markers give the hike a human story you don’t get on manicured resort trails.

Happy hiking! Just remember to bring water and maybe a snack to enjoy at the beach.
