Backpacking in Loterie Farm
🏆 Top pickattraction ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026

Loterie Farm is a private nature reserve and not a national park, so there is no ranger station, no park pass and no marked network of long trails. It sits in the north of Saint Martin, on the forested slopes of Pic Paradis, a short drive up from the Marigot and Grand Case road. The walking is modest: shaded dirt paths under tall trees, with roots to step over and a damp, cool air that the coast lacks. You get green filtered light, a few lizards and birds, and a plunge pool at the end. Fewer crowds show up early; by midday the pool area fills and the music carries. Wildlife is small scale, mostly birds, iguanas and the odd mongoose. Public transport is thin, so a rental car or taxi settles the matter. Hikers wanting distance will find it short. It suits travelers who want an easy forest morning with a swim, and people who like quiet and long summit days will be happier elsewhere.

What sets this place apart

Loterie Farm gives independent travelers the island’s one proper forest experience without a guide, a booking agent or a fixed itinerary. You walk in on your own, pick a path, and decide how long to stay. That freedom matters on an island where much of the coast is built up and the interior is hard to reach.
The pull is the shade. Under the canopy of Pic Paradis, the island’s highest point at roughly 424 meters, the air is several degrees cooler than on the beaches, which makes it the sensible midday option when the sun is brutal. The farm’s natural spring-fed pool is the reward after a sweaty climb, and you can reach it without any equipment.

Trail variety is modest but real. Short loops suit a lazy morning, while the steeper path toward the ridge gives backpackers a proper leg workout and views over both coasts. Self-guided visitors do fine here, since the paths are easy to follow and nothing needs a tour. Treat it as a half-day base for stretching your legs between beach days.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Loterie Farm

  1. The Pic Paradis summit trail: the climb the farm is best known for, a steep forest path that gains height quickly and ends with views over the island and out toward neighboring Caribbean islands on clear days.
  2. The spring-fed pool: a cool freshwater pool set among boulders and trees, good for a swim after walking, though it gets busy by midday.
  3. Forest walking paths: shaded dirt tracks through tropical dry forest with large trees, ferns and roots. They are gentle and suit a slow morning.
  4. Tree-top zip lines and rope course: Fly Zone, the farm’s high-wire course, runs between trees above the forest floor. It costs extra and needs a booking, so go early.
  5. Birdlife and lizards: hummingbirds, bananaquits and pearly-eyed thrashers are common, while iguanas and anoles sun themselves on rocks and trunks.

  6. The old farm grounds: remnants of the former agricultural estate lie among the trees, giving the walk some history and a sense of how the hillside was once worked.
  7. The restaurant and bar terrace: a treehouse-style deck above the forest where you can sit with a drink and watch the canopy move.
For a first visit, start with the spring-fed pool and a short forest loop before the crowds arrive, then decide whether you have the energy for the summit trail.

The best window for Loterie Farm is December to April, when days are dry, breezy and the Pic Paradis trails stay firm underfoot.
  • Dry Season (December to April): Daytime highs run 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F), nights 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F). Rain is light and brief, the forest trails are easiest, and the pool deck and zipline fill up. Prices for nearby rooms peak, especially over Christmas and New Year.

  • Daylight: Days last about 11 hours in December and nearly 13 in June, so start hikes early either way.
Book the Loterie Farm day pass and zipline for a weekday morning, when the pool is calmest.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Most backpackers sleep in Grand Case or Marigot and visit Loterie Farm by day, since the farm has no rooms of its own.
Loterie Farm sits above Rambaud on the French side, on the slopes of Pic Paradis, about a ten-minute drive from Grand Case and Marigot.
Grand Case is my first pick. It has small guesthouses and studios from about €80 to 130 a night, a walkable beach, and the island’s best cluster of lolos (casual grill shacks) for cheap dinners. From there you can reach the farm by a short taxi or rental car.
Marigot is more practical for budgets and transport. Its bus stop, market and supermarkets … read more 👉

Marigot is more practical for budgets and transport. Its bus stop, market and supermarkets make it easy to stock up, and simple hotels and apartments start around €70 to 110.
Orient Bay is the social base, with hostel-style rooms and guesthouses from roughly €40 to 70 for a dorm or basic room, plus bars and water sports. It is about 15 minutes from the farm by car.
Across the border, Philipsburg on the Dutch side has the most budget options and cruise-ship crowds. Book ahead from December to April, since cheaper rooms vanish first.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Loterie Farm is straightforward and well run, and most problems come from heat, wet rock and unprepared footwear rather than anything dangerous. The trails up Pic Paradis (424 m, 1,391 ft) are short but steep, with roots, loose stones and clay that turns slick after rain. Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops, and carry at least a liter and a half of water, because the humid forest air drains you faster than the distance suggests. Start early to dodge midday heat.
The pool and cabana area has slippery stone edges, so walk rather than run and keep valuables in a locker. Follow the guide’s briefing on the zipline and treetop course, and do not skip the harness check.
Wildlife is mild. Expect green iguanas, lizards, hummingbirds and mosquitoes, so bring repellent for dusk. Do not feed the animals. … read more 👉

Wildlife is mild. Expect green iguanas, lizards, hummingbirds and mosquitoes, so bring repellent for dusk. Do not feed the animals. If a storm builds, leave the ridge trails early, since lightning and mud are the real hazards. Phone signal is patchy under the canopy, so download a map first.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Plan one full day for Loterie Farm, or a half day if you only want the hike. A morning on the Pic Paradis trail takes about 2 to 3 hours round trip, and the pool area and zipline fill the afternoon. Two days works if you want to split the activities and avoid midday heat.
Loterie Farm is possible without a car but less convenient. Taxis from Grand Case or Marigot take about 10 minutes and cost roughly €15 to 25 each way, and the buses along the main roads leave you with a walk uphill. Arrange a pickup time with your driver, since cell signal and taxi availability are limited near the entrance.
Loterie Farm charges an entrance fee, but you need no permit. Forest trail access costs roughly €10 to 15 per person, while the pool and cabana area is a separate day-use fee, often with a food and drink minimum. The zipline course costs about €45 to 60 and is best booked ahead in high season, from December to April.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Loterie Farm works best on a weekday morning, ideally soon after the gates open, when the forest on Pic Paradis is cool and the pool still has room around it. By midday the loungers fill and the music goes up, which suits a party mood but not a quiet walk. I would hike first, swim after, and skip weekends in the winter high season, when the pool area gets crowded. Bring sturdy shoes with grip for the damp, rooty trails.
