Backpacking in Red Sand Dunes
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

You have to choose at Red Sand Dunes: treat it as a lazy photo stop from Riyadh, or commit to climbing the soft, sliding sand until your calves scream and the city drops away behind you. Red Sand Dunes sits west of Riyadh in central Saudi Arabia, a quick escape where orange-red hills roll toward low, rocky ridges. The hike itself is short but punishing; every step sinks, every ridge you crest reveals another, and the sun reflects off the sand like a heat lamp. The payoff is big-sky views, ATV engines buzzing below, and that first icy drink back at the car. It’s easy to reach by car but awkward by public transport, and compared with longer escarpment hikes like Edge of the World, it’s less epic, more raw workout-with-a-view.
