Years ago, Kikinda felt like a forgotten industrial corner of northern Serbia: quiet streets, a faint smell of grain from the silos, and almost no reason for a traveler to linger. Today it’s still low-key, but the edges are softer—more cafés, a few artsy touches, and locals who are used to curious outsiders passing through. You’ll find it in the flat fields of the Banat region, close to the Romanian border, northeast of Novi Sad and Belgrade, and very much off the standard backpacker radar.

For backpackers, Kikinda works less as a “must‑see” destination and more as a calm, practical stop on a longer route through Vojvodina or toward Romania. The compact center is walkable in ten or fifteen minutes, with a broad main square, a church or two, and those long, tree‑lined streets that glow orange at sunset. Buses connect you reasonably well to Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, and Subotica, but schedules can be sparse, especially on Sundays, so you plan your exits instead of winging them. There’s usually at least one budget hotel or guesthouse and a couple of simple rooms-for-rent; true hostels are rare, which means fewer backpacker meetups but more real conversations with locals over thick Turkish coffee or a plate of grilled meat and ajvar. Evenings are slow: people stroll, kids ride bikes, bars fill gently rather than loudly, and you’ll feel safe walking home, though the emptiness can feel eerie if you’re used to big-city noise. Compared with Novi Sad’s student buzz or Subotica’s art‑nouveau drama, Kikinda is flatter, cheaper, and more functional, but that’s its charm: a place where you catch your breath, watch everyday Serbia move at half speed, and then push on.
