Backpacking in Southern Ridges
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Most people only realize after they go that the Southern Ridges is basically Singapore’s best “big hike” you can squeeze between breakfast and dinner without wrecking your legs or your budget. It runs along the hilltops in the south of the island, linking Mount Faber, Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridge Park, just a few MRT stops from the city center. For backpackers, it’s a low-cost, low-friction way to trade malls for canopy walks and coastal views: no entrance fee, easy trailheads, and enough distance to feel like a real walk without needing hardcore gear. You get birds, monkeys, and lush forest, but also manicured paths, crowds on weekends, and zero camping or cheap stays directly on the route, unlike more “wild” spots like Bukit Timah or MacRitchie. I treat it as a half-day reset, not a full-on trek—urban escape, not expedition.

  • Henderson Waves — The signature, sinuous wooden-and-steel pedestrian bridge that arches above the tree canopy; great light at sunrise/sunset and atmospheric LED lighting at night. It’s also my personal favorite for the views and that “you’re above the trees” feeling.
  • Mount Faber / Faber Point — A short climb to a classic lookout with sweeping harbour and city panoramas; there’s a café and the cable car to Sentosa if you want to extend the outing. Easy to reach and excellent for photos.
  • Forest Walk (Telok Blangah Hill Park) — An elevated boardwalk threading through secondary rainforest; low, shaded, and surprisingly quiet. You’ll see lots of native plants and often birds and squirrels up close.

  • HortPark — A horticultural hub with themed gardens, show plots and plant displays — perfect if you like botanics and want a rest on benches surrounded by curated greenery. Good for learning and picking up planting ideas.
  • Kent Ridge Park & Canopy Walk — History and nature mixed: WWII markers, shady trails and a canopy-style path with coastal glimpses. Less crowded than the central spots and nice for birdwatching in the morning.
  • Birdlife & small wildlife spots — Not a single place, but the whole ridgeline is surprisingly biodiverse: sunbirds, white-breasted kingfishers, monitor lizards, and lots of butterflies. Bring binoculars and stroll slowly early or late in the day.

If you prefer a bit more comfort, look at hotels in the Orchard Road area. They’re a short bus or MRT ride away from the park and offer easy access to the city’s attractions.

Be mindful of transportation costs; public transit is efficient but can add up if you’re not careful. Grab an EZ-Link card to save money on rides.

Ultimately, the key is to balance convenience with budget. Choose a spot that allows you to recharge after a day of hiking, so you’re ready for the next adventure.

Visiting the Southern Ridges in Singapore is largely free, which is a huge plus. The main trails, including the Henderson Waves and Mount Faber Park, don’t charge an entry fee. You can wander through lush greenery and enjoy stunning views without spending a dime.

However, if you plan to use public transport to get there, budget for that. A single trip on the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) will cost you around €1.50 to €2.50 (or about $1.60 to $2.70). If you’re coming from the city center, expect to pay closer to the higher end of that range.
