Sint Maarten is only 13 miles long, so every beach sits within an hour’s drive of every other. That is rare in the Caribbean, where beach hopping often means flights or ferries. The island also carries two cultures: Dutch infrastructure and duty-free prices on one side, French bakeries and a relaxed clothing-optional streak on the other. Trade winds keep the Atlantic coast rough and the Caribbean coast calm, so the sea you want decides the side you pick.

Know before you book: the island is not cheap, imports almost everything, and sunbed rentals are standard at popular spots. Hurricane damage in 2017 changed parts of the coastline, and some areas rebuilt faster than others. Airport planes pass very low over one famous bay, which is a spectacle or a nuisance depending on your mood. Carry some US dollars and euros, since both circulate.
