Backpacking in Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit
👌 Worth visitingattraction ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 23, 2026

The man who made Yoda’s eyes for The Empire Strikes Back is the reason this place exists, and Nick Maley has often been around to chat about it himself. Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit sits on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten, on Front Street in Philipsburg. It is small, so you will not burn a day here, and it is not cheap for what fits in a few rooms. Crowds are rarely an issue; you may share it with a cruise-day couple or nobody at all. The appeal is quiet: puppets, sculpted heads, film props and behind-the-scenes photos from some of the biggest sci-fi sets ever built, shown at arm’s length. Go if you grew up on these films and want a rainy-day stop that feels personal. Bring cash for the entry fee and gift shop, and check that it is open before you head over.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #2 attraction in Sint Maarten
The unique appeal for travelers

Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit is worth a detour because the person behind it actually worked on the films. Nick Maley was a makeup and special effects artist on the original Yoda puppet, and the stories attached to the objects here come from someone who was in the room, not from a licensing department. That changes how a replica head or a faded photo reads.
The second reason is contrast. Sint Maarten is mostly beaches, boats and duty-free shopping, and this is one of the few places on the island built around craft rather than sand. Seeing how foam, latex and hand-painted eyes became a character that people still quote gives you something to talk about at the hostel bar.
It also fits easily into a day on Front Street in Philipsburg, so you do not need to plan a whole day around it. Expect an hour or … read more 👉

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. The Yoda puppet replicas. The headline attraction. Close-up Yoda figures let you study the wrinkled skin, ears and expression that made a rubber puppet feel alive.
  2. Yoda’s eyes story. Maley worked on the eyes of the original Yoda for The Empire Strikes Back. Hearing how eyes were sculpted and painted to look knowing is the most memorable part of the visit.
  3. Behind-the-scenes photographs. Framed pictures from film sets show crews at work, which is far more interesting than polished promo shots.
  4. Film props and memorabilia. Pieces linked to Star Wars and other sci-fi productions Maley worked on, including Alien and Superman, are displayed along with posters and collectibles.
  5. Nick Maley’s own artwork. Beyond film work, there are paintings and sculptures by the artist, a reminder that special effects

  6. Masks and creature heads. Latex faces and creature pieces show how makeup artists build character from the skin outward. Look at the seams and paint layers up close.
  7. The gift shop. A small shop with Yoda-themed souvenirs and items connected to the exhibit. It is a better place to buy a keepsake than the cruise-port stalls.
Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit charges a modest entry fee at the door and does not require booking ahead.

  • Dry Season (December to April): Days run 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F) with steady trade winds and little rain. This is peak cruise and winter-escape season, so the Maho Beach side gets crowded and beds cost the most.
  • Hurricane Season (June to November): Highs reach 30 to 32°C (86 to 90°F), with humid air and heavy showers, mostly August to October. Prices drop sharply, but some small businesses close for a few weeks in September and October.
  • Shoulder Months (May and November to early December): Expect 28 to 31°C (82 to 88°F), patchy showers, and thinner crowds. Rooms are cheaper than in winter and most places are open.
  • Time of Day: Daylight stays within roughly 11 to 13 hours across the year, so you have a full day for roaming. Cruise ships dock on most weekdays, and late afternoon is calmer.

Simpson Bay is the best base for backpackers, with Maho a close second. Both sit a short drive from the exhibit, on the flat strip around the airport and the lagoon.
Simpson Bay: This is the most social area for budget travelers. Bars, small supermarkets, dive shops, and beach restaurants line the road, so you can eat, drink, and meet people without a car. Buses and shared taxis pass along the main road, and the walk back at night is mostly lit and busy. Rooms and dorm beds are limited, so book early in winter.

Maho: Right beside the runway beach, it has the liveliest nightlife and the most tourists. It suits you if you want plane-watching, casinos, and beach bars close by. It is pricier and louder, and cruise-day crowds are heavy.
Cole Bay and Philipsburg: Cole Bay costs less, but it is quieter and more local. Philipsburg, the capital, is a short walk from the exhibit and has more budget rooms and a long beachfront boardwalk. Stay on the main streets after dark, and use a taxi for late returns.
Solo travelers usually do best in Simpson Bay, where hostel-style stays and guesthouses cluster and meeting others is easy.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit is a small stop, and the usual mistake is rushing through it in ten minutes on the way to the beach. Slow down, read the captions, and ask any staff member about Maley’s work on the original Yoda. Go in the morning, then head to Simpson Bay for lunch.
