The first surprise is the water: you step onto Central Beach expecting a tourist strip and find dolphins working the surf line a few meters past the swimmers, and the whole thing is free. Plettenberg Bay sits on the Garden Route in the Western Cape of South Africa, east of Knysna. It is a resort town, so the center is small and fairly pricey, and the shopping strip is not worth your time. The beaches, the Robberg peninsula and the forest trails nearby are. Buses stop on the N2 highway, not in the middle of town, because the highway bypasses it, so an experienced traveler books a hostel with a pickup or uses a local shuttle instead of walking with a pack. Hostels are few and sociable, evenings are quiet outside December, and you will meet people on the Robberg trail. Seals are usually visible from the rocks at the tip.

Bloukrans Bridge:
Around 35 minutes east, this is the site of a well-known bungee jump from one of the world’s highest bridges. A jump costs about US$100 to 130, so decide beforehand whether it is worth the splurge. The view from the walkway is cheaper if you only want to look.

Plettenberg Bay is a destination in its own right, with enough to fill several days. Robberg Nature Reserve (entry about US$5 to 6) has a 9.2 km loop with Cape fur seals, and the Keurbooms River and Lookout Beach are close at hand. Southern right whales pass between roughly June and November, and Tsitsikamma and Knysna are both within an hour's drive.
Plettenberg Bay suits 3 to 4 days if you want to hike Robberg, kayak or canoe the Keurbooms River (about US$20 to 30), and spend a day at the beaches. Two days covers Robberg and a beach afternoon, but leaves out the river and the coast to the east. Add a fifth day if you plan to bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge (about US$130 to 150) or visit Tsitsikamma.
Plettenberg Bay can be done as a day trip from Knysna, which is about 30 minutes (30 km) away by car, or from George, around 1.5 hours (about 120 km). From Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), the drive is about 2.5 hours (roughly 230 km). The Baz Bus and long-distance coaches such as Intercape stop here, but a single day leaves little time after the drive, so staying one night gives you the Robberg hike and the beach without rushing.
