Backpacking in Pofadder
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #25
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Pofadder is named after a puff adder, but the name comes from a Khoi chief called Klaas Pofadder, so snakes are not the story. The town sits in the Northern Cape of South Africa, in flat, red-sand Bushmanland. Skip any plan for nightlife or sightseeing: there are a few streets, a petrol stop and quiet evenings. What you get is a clean overnight, a hot meal and wide stars. I still connect the place with the dry rattle of wind through the camel-thorn trees. Fill your fuel tank before the next stretch.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #25 town in South Africa
What makes this town worth visiting

Pofadder earns its place as a convenient halfway point on the long N14 and R358 routes between Upington and Springbok, and it suits self-drivers and cyclists who need a bed rather than a spectacle. Most travelers stay one night. The guesthouses are small and run by locals, so you often end up chatting over dinner with farmers or other overlanders. Come in spring and the surrounding plains can fill with wildflowers, and the granite outcrops nearby are good for easy walks. Solo travelers who like quiet, and anyone heading to the Richtersveld or the Namibian border, will find it useful. Do not expect much nightlife.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Pofadder Hotel and the Main Street: the old hotel is the town’s best-known landmark and the place everyone stops for a cold drink and a photo with the name. Late afternoon is the quietest time. Free to look, 30 minutes.
  2. Pofadder Dutch Reformed Church: a plain, solid church on the main road that shows how the settlement grew around its congregation. Best seen in soft morning light. Free from outside, 15 minutes.
  3. Pofadder Mission Station area: the old mission roots of the town are marked by a few historic buildings and a small cemetery. Go in the cooler morning. Free, about 30 minutes.
  4. Pofadder Koppie (granite hill): a short scramble up the rock outcrop on the edge of town gives a flat, wide view across the plains and the town grid. Best at dusk. Free, 45 minutes.
  5. Pofadder Pharmacy and General Dealer

  5. Pofadder Pharmacy and General Dealer Streets: a walk past the old shops and the local farm store shows how the town serves the surrounding farms. Weekday mornings are busiest. Free, about 30 minutes.
Outside town, Augrabies Falls National Park, Kakamas and the Orange River vineyards, and the Namaqua flower country near Springbok are the best day or overnight additions from Pofadder. Start with the koppie climb at dusk, since the view is the one thing here that really repays the effort.

🏘️ NeighborhoodsKey areas and districts to know

Pofadder is a small Northern Cape town you can cover on foot in under an hour, so treat these as three pockets rather than districts.
  • Main Street (Voortrekker Street): The tar strip with the petrol stations, supermarket, bank and takeaway counters. Fill up, withdraw cash, grab a toasted sandwich or a plate of braai meat. It is functional, not pretty, and ten minutes is enough.
  • Around the church and the Pofadder name stone area: Quiet side streets with old gabled houses and a sandstone feel. Walk it in the cooler hours for dust, silence and a sense of how a farming town actually lives.
  • Pofadder Mountain and the outskirts: Flat dirt tracks and a low granite koppie edge the town. Skip long hikes in summer heat. Go for the wide, empty Bushmanland horizon and a sky packed with stars.

⌛️ 1 dayHow to make the most of one day

8:00 AM: Breakfast on Main Street Start with coffee and a farm-style breakfast at a local café, then watch farmers collect supplies. It sets the rhythm of the place.
9:30 AM: Dutch Reformed Church and Mission Area Walk a few minutes to see the church and the old mission buildings, then wander the quiet back streets where the early settlement began.
11:30 AM: Pofadder Hotel Stop for a cold drink and a photo with the sign, and talk to whoever is behind the bar.
1:00 PM: Lunch and Rest Eat a toasted sandwich or a hearty meat dish, then rest through the hottest hours.
4:30 PM: Pofadder Koppie Away from the standard stops, climb this granite outcrop for the best view across the plains as the shadows lengthen.
7:00 PM: Braai Dinner Finish with a barbecue at your guesthouse under a huge sky.

🌤️ When to go?When to go for the best experience

Pofadder is a desert-edge town where winter (June to August) gives the easiest sightseeing: days of 18 to 22°C (64 to 72°F), but nights that drop near freezing, to around 2°C (36°F).
  • Summer (Nov to Feb): Daytime highs of 35 to 40°C (95 to 104°F), long daylight and thunderstorms occasionally.
  • Spring (Aug to Oct): Wildflowers can carpet the region after good rains, and prices for beds rise in the Namaqualand flower weeks.
  • Autumn (Mar to May): Warm days around 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F) and quiet roads.
Book beds ahead in flower season, since few exist.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in South Africa

Stay in the central area close to Voortrekker Street, where the few guesthouses, small budget rooms and self-catering options cluster. Beds are scarce, so expect private rooms at US$30 to 55 rather than a hostel dorm, and book ahead during the spring flower season. Being central means the supermarket, fuel and takeaways sit a short walk away, which matters after dark when the streets are quiet and dimly lit. The N14 truck noise is modest at night. Quieter residential streets just off the main road suit light sleepers better.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get around Pofadder

Arriving without your own wheels and expecting to hop around is the costliest mistake, because Pofadder has no city bus and the next town is far away. Distances here run to hundreds of kilometers of straight tar, with the N14 cutting through town.
  • Walking: Free, flat and finished in minutes. You get shade-free streets, an unhurried pace and a shop within five minutes of anywhere.
  • Long-distance bus: Intercape and similar coaches on the Upington to Cape Town corridor stop on the N14 on some schedules, about US$25 to 45 to Upington or Springbok. Check the stop in advance, because it is a roadside wait with little shelter.
  • Minibus taxis: Shared vans run to nearby towns for roughly US$8 to 20, usually leaving once full and mostly in the morning. Expect a tight squeeze and a local conversation.
  • Rental

  • Rental car or hitching: A small rental from Upington costs about US$35 to 55 a day and is by far the most practical choice. Fill up whenever you see fuel, since stations are far apart. You get empty-road freedom and open desert views.

🚌 Day tripsBest day trips from Pofadder

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Pofadder

Pofadder is a quiet, small town where crime is low and most problems are practical. Walk the main street freely in daylight, and at night keep to the lit central blocks and avoid wandering the edges alone. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight. Stray dogs are the usual annoyance. The bigger risks are heat, dehydration and running low on fuel, so carry two liters of water per person and fill up early.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Pofadder works as a stopover rather than a destination. It sits on the long N14 between Upington and Springbok, and offers a quiet desert night, a supermarket, fuel and the odd quirky name photo. The real draw is the surrounding Bushmanland and nearby Augrabies Falls, about two hours away.
Pofadder needs one night at most. That gives you an evening walk, a meal and a star-filled sky, then a morning drive onward. Add a second day only if you plan trips to Augrabies Falls or Aggeneys, each roughly one to two hours away.
Pofadder is possible as a long day trip from Upington, roughly a two-hour drive each way (about 200 km), but only with a car. It makes more sense as a break on the Upington to Springbok route. Public transport is thin, so a one-way minibus taxi costs around US$8 to 20 and may take half a day.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Pofadder’s real attraction is the sky, which first-time visitors overlook while hunting for sights. I would book a room away from the main road, step outside after dinner, and let the Milky Way do the entertaining.

✈️ When did I visit South Africa?
I have visited South Africa, before and after my Zimbabwe trip in 2001.
