Backpacking in Skansbukta
👌 Worth visitingregion ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

Most summaries sell Skansbukta as a “quick photo stop from a cruise,” but the real twist is that it’s one of the few spots in Isfjorden where you feel the ghost of industry as strongly as the wilderness: abandoned gypsum mine, rusting machinery, and sheer cliffs all crammed into one tight amphitheater. Skansbukta sits on the eastern side of Billefjorden, off the main Isfjorden system, a boat ride away from Longyearbyen. For backpackers, it’s raw, not a base. You sleep in town, then day-trip in by boat or kayak if you’re skilled and guided. It’s cheaper than multi-day expeditions but still Arctic-expensive, with zero facilities, no crowds, and a moodier, more haunted feel than the “Instagram glacier” runs closer to Longyearbyen. Think side quest, not home hub.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather & Temperature: Skansbukta’s weather swings hard. From June to August, expect highs around 5-7°C (41-45°F)—chilly but manageable with layers. Winter months plunge below -20°C (-4°F), not for the faint-hearted.
  • Daylight Hours: Midnight sun rules from late April to mid-August, giving you endless daylight to explore. Conversely, the polar night from late October to mid-February means near-total darkness—great for aurora chasers but tricky for navigation.
  • Crowds: Peak season is summer. July sees the most visitors, so trails and boat tours fill up fast. Shoulder months like June and early September offer quieter vibes without sacrificing daylight.
