Ten years ago, Latakia International Festival felt like a wild seaside block party: packed stands, big Arab pop names, fireworks punching the sky over the Mediterranean. Today, after war, sanctions, and economic collapse, it’s a thinner, more cautious version of itself, but it still fires up the summer nights when it runs. You’ll find it in Latakia, Syria’s main coastal city in the northwest, usually centered around the corniche and nearby venues. The program leans on Arabic pop, patriotic performances, and local dance troupes, drawing mostly Syrian families, students, and soldiers on leave. The vibe is proud, noisy, and heavily policed rather than carefree. As a backpacker, it’s less about “great music” and more about witnessing how people insist on joy under pressure.
