Ras al-Basit’s curveball is that, despite the postcard talk of “pristine Mediterranean bliss,” you’ll often find plastic bottles in the sand and families picnicking five meters from where someone’s camping stove is sputtering. It sits on Syria’s northwestern coast in Latakia Governorate, up the road from Latakia city toward the Turkish border. For a backpacker, it’s a weirdly compelling mix: dark, pebbly-sand beach, pine-covered hills, and a slightly scruffy, lived-in feel instead of resort polish. The water is usually calm enough for relaxed swimming, not exciting enough for real surf, and snorkeling is only mildly interesting unless you’re just happy to float around. It can get crowded with local holidaymakers, but that also means cheap grilled fish, shawarma, and basic rooms within walking distance. Compared with Latakia’s city beaches, Ras al-Basit feels more scenic and less concrete, but it’s not as clean or wild as the quieter coves further north.
