Backpacking in White Sand Beach
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 31, 2026

White Sand Beach is not Thailand’s last untouched shoreline, no matter what that one blog with the overexposed photos told you. It’s the main backpacker strip on Koh Chang, in the eastern Gulf near the Cambodian border, and it feels like it. The sand is genuinely lovely and the sunsets work hard, but the water can be murky and the beach gets crowded and a bit cigarette‑butt-y in high season. You get easy access, cheap Thai food, and plenty of budget rooms, but also traffic noise and bar music. Compared with quieter Lonely Beach or Klong Prao, White Sand is more convenient than magical. Essential if you want a social base; overrated if you’re chasing castaway vibes.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #10 beach in Thailand
What makes it a must-see beach

White Sand Beach in Thailand is one of those spots that backpackers can’t resist, and honestly, who can blame them? The laid-back atmosphere feels like a warm hug after a week of trekking. You can kick back with a cold drink, and the affordability is a breath of fresh air—think cheap eats and budget bungalows that don’t skimp on charm.

The social scene is lively, with fellow travelers swapping stories like trading cards. It’s not just about the water access—though the turquoise waves are inviting. This beach serves as a crucial pause in your journey, a place to recharge before tackling the next leg of your coastal adventure. Plus, it’s a natural connector along the route, making it a perfect pit stop. So, while it may not be the most epic beach on the planet, it’s definitely worth your time.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Long, walkable shoreline and sunset promenade — The beach stretches for nearly 2 km, so you can actually go for a proper stroll instead of being boxed into a tiny sunbathing patch. Mornings are for runners and quiet tide pools; evenings pull in a mix of backpackers and locals for classic sunset people-watching with cheap snacks handy along the road.
  2. Snorkeling at the rocky headlands — Small rocky points at the north and south ends hold pockets of coral and fish just a short swim from shore, so you don’t need a boat to see life underwater. It’s especially great for quick, low-cost snorkel sessions—bring your own mask to save money and spot schools of curious reef fish.
  3. Paddleboarding and kayak runs to hidden coves — Rentals are cheap and you can paddle into little bays and mangrove inlets

  3. Paddleboarding and kayak runs to hidden coves — Rentals are cheap and you can paddle into little bays and mangrove inlets that are otherwise hard to reach on foot. It’s relaxed, scenic, and perfect for sneaking away from the busier central sands for an hour or two.
  4. Beachfront seafood grills and casual sand-side dining — Local vendors grill the day’s catch on the sand; think plates of whole fish and skewers eaten with bare feet in the sand. It’s a seriously budget-friendly way to eat fresh seafood while watching the sea—no pretense, just good food and sunset views.
  5. Laid-back evening atmosphere: live music, street food and fire shows — Nightlife here isn’t high-glam clubbing; it’s acoustic bands, impromptu fire performances on the sand, and stalls selling late-night fried snacks. If you want low-key nights where you can chat, drink cheap cocktails, and still be on the beach, this is the vibe.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to visit White Sand Beach

  • Topic: Weather – The dry season from November to February is your best bet. Expect clear skies and minimal rain, unlike the monsoon months (May to October) when the beach turns into a soggy mess.

  • Topic: Temperature – Daytime temps hover between 28-32°C (82-90°F) during the dry season, perfect for sunbathing without melting into the sand. The rainy season cools things down slightly but adds humidity that feels like a sauna test.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours – Around 11-12 hours of daylight year-round, so no need to rush your beach time. Sunrise and sunset times shift only slightly, giving you plenty of daylight to explore or nap.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak season (December-January) means more tourists and inflated prices. If you want fewer people and better deals, aim for shoulder months like November

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry season brings snorkeling, diving, and boat tours in full swing. Monsoon months shut most of these down, so plan accordingly if underwater adventures are on your list.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect prices to spike during peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year. Off-season offers bargains but comes with the risk of rain and rough seas.

Pro-tip: Visit just before or after peak season—November or February—when the weather’s still solid, crowds thin out, and your wallet breathes easier.

White Sand Beach in Thailand is a backpacker’s paradise, but not every spot is created equal.

Essential: The area around the beach itself is a no-brainer. You’ll find a mix of budget bungalows and lively hostels where the vibe is social and welcoming. Picture this: you roll out of bed, grab a coffee, and within minutes, you’re sinking your toes into warm sand. Plus, the proximity to beach bars means sunset cocktails are just a hop away.

Overrated: Avoid the far ends of the beach. Sure, they look serene, but you’ll be isolated from the action. If you’re hoping for spontaneous beach volleyball games or late-night chats with fellow travelers, those quiet spots will leave you feeling like a lone island.

Stick to the central area for safety, socializing, and the best access to the beach. Embrace the chaos; it’s all part of the adventure!

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in White Sand Beach

White Sand Beach in Thailand is generally a safe haven for backpackers, but a little situational awareness goes a long way. The swimming conditions are usually calm, with gentle waves that invite you in. Just keep an eye on the flags; they’re your best friend for gauging safety. Locals know where to swim, so follow their lead.

Watch out for the sun, especially midday. Sunscreen is your ally, and a hat is a wise investment. As for marine life, jellyfish can occasionally make an appearance, but they’re not a daily concern. Just be mindful of where you step—reefs can be sharp. Theft isn’t rampant, but don’t leave valuables unattended. Enjoy the beach; it’s a slice of paradise, not a survival test.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

White Sand Beach is a slice of paradise where the water is so clear you’ll think you’re swimming in a giant aquamarine. But let’s be real: it’s also a magnet for tourists. Expect crowded stretches and a few too many beach vendors. Still, if you can snag a quiet spot with a cold drink, it’s worth the hustle. Just don’t forget your patience!

✈️ When did I visit Thailand?
Before visiting Vietnam (1998), I had some time in Thailand to explore the country.
