Backpacking in Saklıkent Gorge
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 30, 2026

Your first real decision at Saklıkent Gorge is simple but important: do you just walk the safe, built-up boardwalk and splash a little at the mouth of the canyon, or do you commit to wading into the cold, fast water and pushing deeper into the gorge itself. That choice decides whether this is a quick photo stop or a half-day, energy-draining adventure. Saklıkent Gorge sits inland from Fethiye and Kaş in southwest Türkiye, in a national park that’s dramatic, cheap to enter, and very commercial at the front. The canyon walls and icy river feel wild, but the snack stalls, ticket booths, and tour buses do not. Hiking is short and technical rather than long and remote; think slippery rocks, chest-deep crossings, and occasional guides, not multi-day trails like in Köprülü Canyon or the quieter valleys around Gömbe. Wildlife is minimal, crowds are heavy in season, and camping right at the gorge is limited to basic pansiyon-style places nearby. The vibe: half nature spectacle, half outdoor amusement park, still worth it if you go early, go light, and accept the chaos as the price of seeing one of Türkiye’s more intense little canyons.

  • The Narrow Canyon (Main Gorge) — A jaw-dropping chute where limestone walls squeeze together, often 300m deep and carved into dramatic vertical cliffs. The scale and echo make it feel cinematic; photographers and quiet hikers both love this stretch.
  • Wading Walk & Wooden Walkways — Boardwalks hug the canyon and at times you’re waist-deep in icy river water, picking your steps over slippery stones. It’s the signature hands-on experience of Saklıkent — my personal favorite for the raw, wet feel of the place and the instant cool-down on hot days.
  • Cold Mountain River & Natural Pools — Snowmelt keeps the water crystal clear and bone-chilling even in summer. Shallow pools, riffles and small channels make great spots to rest, soak your feet, or watch tiny fish and aquatic life dart about.

  • Upper Trails & Plateau Views — Trails climbing above the gorge open to high plateaus and sweeping panoramas. Wildflower meadows, pine and cedar stands, and quieter hiking options reward anyone who wants a longer, drier trek away from the water.
  • Waterfalls and Side Cascades — Smaller falls feed into the main gorge, creating photogenic cascades, misty corners and neat little plunge pools. Perfect for short detours and cooling off between hikes.
  • Karst Rock Formations & Geological Features — Sculpted limestone walls, striations, potholes and occasional visible fossils tell the canyon’s story. It’s a playground for anyone who likes geology or dramatic natural textures.
  • Riverside Cafés & Entrance Atmosphere — The canyon’s entrance is lively: riverside tea gardens, simple cafes and local vendors make for easy picnics or a relaxed post-hike meal. Great place to dry off, people-watch and sample regional snacks.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to explore Saklıkent Gorge

  • Weather: Spring and early autumn offer the most stable weather. Summers can be scorchers, pushing 35°C (95°F) or more, which makes trekking through the gorge’s narrow paths less comfortable and riskier due to heat exhaustion.

  • Temperature: In spring (April-May), expect 15-25°C (59-77°F), ideal for hiking without overheating. Winter months drop to near freezing, around 0-5°C (32-41°F), making the gorge slippery and less accessible.

  • Daylight Hours: Longer days in late spring and early summer mean more daylight for exploration—up to 14-15 hours. Winter cuts this down to about 9-10 hours, limiting your window for safe trekking.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for canyoning and swimming in the gorge’s icy waters, but only if you’re prepared for cold shocks. Spring and autumn are better for hiking and photography without the rush.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guided tours spike in summer; booking ahead is essential. Off-season rates drop significantly, but some services may be limited or closed.

Pro-tip: Aim for late April or early October—cooler temps, fewer crowds, and still enough daylight to enjoy the gorge without the summer chaos or winter chill.

For a more comfortable stay, consider the nearby town of Fethiye, about 50 kilometers away. It’s a bustling hub with a range of accommodations, from budget hostels to mid-range hotels. Staying here gives you access to local markets, restaurants, and the vibrant nightlife, plus it’s a great base for day trips to the gorge.

Another option is the village of Kayaköy, just a short drive from the gorge. It’s quieter and offers charming guesthouses that reflect the local culture. This can be a peaceful retreat after a day of hiking.

Be mindful of transportation costs if you’re relying on public transport. Buses run from Fethiye to the gorge, but they can be infrequent. Renting a car might save you time and energy, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Prioritize your budget for experiences over accommodation; you’ll want to invest in guided tours or local meals that truly capture the essence of the area.

Saklıkent Gorge is a breathtaking escape, where the cool river cuts through towering cliffs, offering a refreshing dip after a hike. But be prepared: the crowds can swell, especially in summer. Arrive early to snag a good spot and avoid the midday rush. Embrace the beauty, but don’t let the throngs drain your energy.
