Backpacking in South Downs
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 16, 2026

Most guides sell South Downs National Park as “gentle hills for Sunday strollers,” but the real surprise for backpackers is how committing the full 160 km South Downs Way feels once you factor in long water gaps, exposed ridgelines, and limited cheap beds near trail. The park runs across the south of the UK between Winchester and Eastbourne, a green spine above the coast. You get chalk downs, sea cliffs, skylarks, and easy rail access, plus no entrance fee. You also get road noise, busy honeypot villages, and patchy wild camping that’s technically not allowed. Compared with the New Forest or the Surrey Hills, it’s bigger, windier, and better for multi-day hiking, but less dramatic than Dartmoor or the Peaks.
