Backpacking in Jumbie Beach
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

You push through sea grape and scrub on a short dirt trail, and the trees open onto pale sand with the water barely moving. Jumbie Beach sits on the north shore of St. John in the United States Virgin Islands, inside Virgin Islands National Park, between Hawksnest and Trunk Bay. It is small, clean and often nearly empty, which is the whole argument for it. Swimming is calm and easy, and snorkeling along the rocky edges is decent but not a reason to cross the island. There are no facilities, no shade beyond the trees, and no food, so bring everything. Skip it if you want a bar. Go if you want quiet. Sea turtles sometimes graze the grass beds just offshore.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #11 beach in United States Virgin Islands
What makes this beach worth visiting

Backpackers stop at Jumbie Beach because it gives you a north shore swim without the crowds that fill the larger beaches a few minutes down the road. The short footpath off North Shore Road filters out casual day-trippers, so you often share the sand with only a handful of people. It also works as a pause on the road between Cruz Bay and the campground side of the island, a place to eat a packed lunch with your feet in the water. Because the park is the draw here, the cost is low: you bring food from town, and the turtle grass beds just offshore provide the entertainment. Pair it with a hike up to the old sugar mill ruins nearby.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Jumbie Beach itself: a small crescent of pale sand with calm, shallow water that suits easy swimming. Its size and the lack of any development make it feel like a private cove. Plan an hour or two.
  2. The Jumbie Beach trail: the short walk from North Shore Road through sea grape and dry forest is part of the appeal, since it keeps the numbers low. It takes only a few minutes each way.
  3. Snorkeling the rocky edges: the rocks at either end of the bay hold small reef fish, and the seagrass in the middle draws green sea turtles now and then. Bring your own mask, as nobody rents gear here.
  4. Peace Hill: a short walk from the beach, this hilltop has the ruins of an old sugar mill and an open view across the water toward Jost Van Dyke and the British Virgin Islands. It is best in the late afternoon, when the

  5. Trunk Bay snorkel trail: the closest bigger draw, with a marked underwater trail just along the road. It has lifeguards, restrooms and a snack stand, and a park entry fee applies. It is best reached early, before the crowds arrive.
Jumbie Beach and the walk to Peace Hill fit together in a relaxed half day, and adding Trunk Bay stretches it to a full one.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Winter High Season (December to April): Dry, breezy days of 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F) and the calmest water, with about 11 hours of daylight. Rooms cost the most, often US$250 and up.
  • Shoulder (May to June): Warmer at 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F), fewer cruise crowds, and rates drop noticeably.
  • Hurricane Season (July to November): Hot, humid, 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), with September and October the wettest and riskiest. Some restaurants close, and prices are lowest.
Late April or May gives you the best mix of calm water and softer prices.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Cruz Bay, on St. John, is the best base, about 15 minutes by road from Jumbie Beach. It has the ferry dock from Red Hook, groceries, bars and the island’s widest choice of rooms, and open-air safari taxis run from town along North Shore Road. The Cinnamon Bay campground, farther east on the same road, is the budget alternative, with bare sites from about US$50 a night. Camping is not offered at the beach itself, so sleep in town and visit by day. Book early for winter.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Jumbie Beach is a calm, generally safe stretch where most visitors swim without trouble. The water is usually gentle and shallow near shore, with small waves, though winter north swells can raise surf and create a pull after storms. Check the water before you commit. Sun is the main hazard here, since shade is limited and the Caribbean sun burns quickly between late morning and mid-afternoon, so bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. Sea grape and seagrass patches hold the occasional sea urchin, so wear water shoes if you wade in rocky or grassy areas. Keep your phone and wallet out of parked cars and out of sight on the sand, as petty theft from vehicles happens at popular spots across the island. Weekdays are quieter.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Jumbie Beach sits on the north shore of St. John, between Hawksnest Beach and Trunk Bay, about 15 minutes by road from Cruz Bay. Take the ferry from Red Hook on St. Thomas to Cruz Bay, then an open-air safari taxi along North Shore Road, or rent a Jeep in Cruz Bay. The roadside lot holds only about six cars, and a short path with wooden steps leads down to the sand. You drive on the left.
Jumbie Beach works well for swimming, since the water is usually calm and shallow near shore, especially from December to April. Surfing is not realistic here, as waves are generally small and the island’s better bodysurf breaks are elsewhere. Snorkeling is fair near the rocky edges, but bring your own mask and fins, since rentals nearby start around US$10 to 20 for a day.
Jumbie Beach is free to enter, as it lies in Virgin Islands National Park, which charges no entrance fee. Parking is free, and there are no facilities, rentals or food, so bring water, snacks and shade.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Jumbie Beach rewards a half day, not a full one. Arrive mid-morning with food and water, swim, snorkel the rocks, then move on to Trunk Bay or Peace Hill before the afternoon heat sets in. I would stay no longer than two or three hours, since there is no shade or food to keep you.
