The bus driver announced Parliament House as my stop, then promptly drove past it, so I walked the last stretch of Canberra's wide, empty boulevards toward glowing buildings. Enlighten Festival fills Canberra, Australia's capital, for about 11 nights from late February into March. It's a free-entry mix of light projections on national institutions, outdoor concerts, balloon events and food stalls, and it draws families, students and road-trippers. Expect crowds but a relaxed mood. Most action sits around Lake Burley Griffin and the Parliamentary Triangle. A first day could mean museums by daylight, a picnic by the lake, then projections after dusk.

Enlighten Festival runs for about 11 nights from late February into March in Canberra, ending on the Canberra Day long weekend, with light projections across the Parliamentary Triangle, Lake Burley Griffin’s shores and the national institutions.
  • Best night: Weeknights are calmer for photos, and the opening weekend has the busiest crowds and live acts.
  • Weather: Evenings run roughly 12 to 24°C (54 to 75°F), mostly dry, and it cools quickly after sunset. Bring a light jacket and comfortable shoes.
  • Booking: Reserve beds a month or two ahead, as rates climb 20 to 50 percent on festival weekends.
  • Crowds: Arrive by 6:30 pm and leave via Civic on foot to avoid car parks.

It is flat, well lit, and full of late-opening bars and cafes where solo travelers meet easily. Nearby New Acton and the Braddon strip offer a more local feel, with breweries and street food a short stroll from the main lakeside routes. Expect a food truck circuit around the lake and near the national institutions, with wood-fired pizza, Turkish gözleme, burgers, dumplings and loaded fries. Sweet stalls sell churros and gelato, while cafes in Civic and Kingston stay open late.

For drinks, look for local craft beer and Canberra district wine, plus coffee, which Canberrans take seriously. Pop-up bars sometimes appear near the main installations.

Most vendors take card or tap, but carry a little cash in case of patchy reception. Lines peak between 7 and 8 pm, so eat before the shows or after the first crowd thins. Portions are generous enough to share, and picnic rugs on the lawns are normal. Bring a refillable water bottle for the long walks between installations.
