Backpacking in Lechweg
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 9, 2026

Your boots thud on damp wooden planks, the roar of the Lech river swallowing your thoughts as cold spray hits your shins and the air smells like wet stone and pine sap. This is the Lechweg, running from near the Formarinsee in Vorarlberg through Tyrol toward Germany, in Austria’s far west. It’s a long-distance trail that feels generous: mostly moderate gradients, big valley views, turquoise water almost the whole way, and villages spaced just right for a hot meal and a soft bed. Public transport to the start is surprisingly painless by Alpine standards—train to Lech am Arlberg, then bus—so you don’t need a car. The downside: some road sections, occasional crowds in peak season, and less drama than the high Alpine routes nearby, but in exchange you get a flowing, river-level journey instead of a suffer-fest of passes and scree.

  1. Formarinsee & the Lechquellen — That small, turquoise alpine lake where the Lech is born; the colors are unreal and the Rote Wand behind it gives you the classic mirror-shot. It’s the emotional kick-off to the trail — compact, dramatic and very walk-up-and-click friendly.
  2. The braided Lech river corridor — Unlike managed rivers elsewhere, this stretch still acts wild: shifting gravel bars, crystal channels and that milky-turquoise water. It’s a photographers’ dream and a hotspot for dippers, wagtails and other river birds — great for quiet wildlife watching from the bank.
  3. High alpine meadows and mountain huts (Almen) — A big part of the Lechweg’s charm is those green terraces dotted with simple huts. Fresh cheese, cowbells, wide views and short, steep climbs to lookout saddles — perfect

  4. Walser villages and local mountain culture — Stops like Warth and small Lechtal villages still wear traditional wood architecture and Alpine traditions. You’ll pass farmsteads, see historic wooden balconies, meet cheese-makers and get a real sense of mountain life beyond the postcard.
  5. Holzgau and the high-valley viewpoints — Narrow valley sections, dramatic cliffs and a classic suspension-bridge/river viewpoint give a different, more intimate feel than the open meadows. It’s one of those spots where the valley narrows, the river rushes louder and the scenery feels properly alpine.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs hover between 18-25°C (64-77°F), perfect for long treks without overheating. Nights dip to 8-12°C (46-54°F), so pack a warm layer for camp or huts.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer opens alpine huts and local festivals, adding cultural flavor to your trek. Outside this window, many huts close, and some trail sections can be muddy or icy.

  • Price Fluctuations: Peak summer inflates accommodation and transport costs. Booking early can save you, but shifting to shoulder months often nets better deals without sacrificing much trail quality.

Pro-tip: Start your hike in early September—fewer crowds, crisp air, and still enough daylight to savor every step without the summer crush.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on hiking the Lechweg

The Lechweg is a pulse of nature that grabs you from the first step. The turquoise river, flanked by lush greenery, feels like a secret handshake with the earth. But be ready for the occasional muddy patch; it can get slippery after rain. Embrace the grit, though. That first cold beer at a local hut, with the mountains towering behind you, makes every slip worth it. You’ll leave with stories etched in your soul.

✈️ When did I visit Austria?
Being so close to my home country, and me loving mountains, I have visited Austria almost every year. During my childhood during summer holidays for hiking in the Alps. Now I go yearly in February or March for skiing. One of the most beautiful countries in the world.
