Backpacking in Leoben
👌 Worth visitingtown ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

People usually know Leoben for its university and steel industry, but that’s not why you’d swing your backpack off here. What matters more is the slow, small-river-town rhythm and how it breaks up a fast Austria itinerary. Leoben sits in Styria, north of Graz, on the Mur River, ringed by low, forested hills. It’s compact, walkable, and feels more like a lived-in town than a stage set: pastel facades around the main square, church bells, the faint smell of woodsmoke in colder months. As a destination, it’s a mellow pause rather than a headliner. Trains make it an easy stop between Vienna, Graz, and the Ennstal, and you can be on a riverside path or a hillside trail within minutes, which is where Leoben quietly shines. Nights are low-key, with a student bar scene instead of big-club chaos, so you’ll meet locals and a few Erasmus types, but not a parade of backpackers like in Graz or Salzburg. Prices run lower than the big-name cities, and it feels very safe, though that calm also means fewer hostels and less built-in social life. Think of Leoben as a practical, slightly gritty but comfortable base for nearby nature and short hikes, or a one-night reset point, not the place you brag about—but the place that makes the rest of your route feel more balanced.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  • Leoben Town Hall (Rathaus) and Stadtturm — An attractive municipal building on the square with a distinctive tower. The façade and surrounding streets show the town’s civic history and are perfect for a quick architectural detour.
  • Stadtpfarrkirche (Leoben Parish Church) — The main parish church in the old town; the interior mixes older elements with later baroque touches and offers a calm, characterful stop with local religious art.

  • Stift Göss (Göss Abbey) — The former abbey complex in the Göss quarter is a real piece of local history: medieval stonework, a church and monastic remains that tie directly into the town’s long mining and brewing story.
  • Gösser Brauerei (Göss Brewery) & museum/tours — One of Austria’s better-known regional breweries is right in Leoben-Göss. Brewery tours and tastings explain local brewing traditions and are genuinely fun for curious travelers.
  • Mur riverside promenade and bridges — Walk along the Mur to see Leoben’s working river: old industrial buildings, footbridges and riverside cafés. It’s simple, photogenic, and shows how the town grew around the water.
  • Kalvarienberg (Calvary Hill) viewpoint — A short climb rewards you with a quieter, elevated view of the rooftops and the surrounding hills. The path and small chapels give a local, contemplative feel you don’t get downtown.
  • Stadtmuseum / local history displays — The city’s museum (and related exhibits) collects mining tools, town artifacts and stories that make Leoben’s industrial past tangible. Small museums like this are where the real local color lives.
  • Leoben City Gallery / regional art spaces — Small but lively exhibition spaces show contemporary and regional art. They’re good for catching rotating shows and a sense of the town’s cultural scene beyond mining and beer.
A few easy day trips nearby: the Erzberg open-pit mine in Eisenerz (industrial tours and dramatic scenery), the Präbichl/Alpine trails for hiking, and the Styrian capital Graz — all close enough for a half- to full-day outing.
