Most people only realize on the bus out that Lunz am See is where you should have slowed down your Austria trip, not rushed through it. The village sits in Lower Austria’s Mostviertel region, tucked between forested hills and the Ybbstal Alps, roughly between Mariazell and the Enns valley routes many backpackers use to cross the country.

For backpackers, it’s a trade: fewer hostels and bars, but a lake you can actually hear, the slap of water against the wooden bathing platforms, cowbells echoing off dark-green slopes. Many stop for a swim break or a single night on the way to bigger names like Hallstatt or Salzburg, then regret not giving it two or three. Evenings are blue-hour walks around the lake, quiet guesthouse dinners, maybe a beer on a small beach; meeting other travelers is possible, but nothing like the social whirl of Göstling or Waidhofen.
