Most people either confuse Ötscher-Tormäuer with a big Alpine resort or assume it’s a tiny local gorge you can “do in an hour.” Both are wrong, and both lead to bad planning. This park sits in Lower Austria, in the Mostviertel region, roughly between Mariazell and Lackenhof, and it’s real mountain country, just not postcard-Tirol dramatic. For backpackers, it’s a solid choice: long day hikes, proper elevation gain, deep gorges, waterfalls, and good chances to spot chamois if you’re quiet. Access by public transport is possible but slower than for places like Gesäuse or Hohe Wand, and services thin out fast after shoulder season. No steep entrance fees, but huts and guesthouses aren’t ultra-cheap, and wild camping is restricted, so you’re mostly in official sites or simple pensions.
