The Bahamas in 2 Days

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 20, 2026
This 48-hour plan suits first-timers to the Bahamas, long-weekend escapers and anyone with a short stopover who wants culture, wildlife and one serious beach without boarding a plane twice. It stays entirely on New Providence, uses Nassau as a single base for two nights and moves at a brisk but unhurried pace. Everything runs on jitneys (the public minibuses, roughly B$1.25 to 1.50, equal to US$1.25 to 1.50, per ride) and the small passenger boats that shuttle between downtown and Paradise Island for about B$4 to 6 (US$4 to 6) each way. No car, no domestic flight, no ferry booking needed.

Day 1: Nassau

Start uphill from the cruise port at the Queen’s Staircase, a flight of steps cut into solid limestone by enslaved laborers in the 1790s, then walk on to the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, housed in Villa Doyle, a restored 1860s mansion on West Hill Street. Give it 90 minutes. The collection runs from early Bahamian landscape painters to contemporary work on migration, hurricanes and … read more 👉

The collection runs from early Bahamian landscape painters to contemporary work on migration, hurricanes and Junkanoo, and it gives you a sharper sense of the country than any souvenir strip on Bay Street.

After lunch, walk 30 to 40 minutes west (or hop a short jitney ride) to Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre. The draw is the flock of Caribbean flamingos, the national bird, trained to march in formation for their keepers several times a day. Check the show schedule at the gate and plan around it. The shaded paths also hold Bahama parrots and rock iguanas, and admission sits around B$20 to 25 (US$20 to 25). Back downtown, eat at the Arawak Cay fish fry stalls, where conch salad is chopped to order with lime, onion and hot pepper.

Day 2: Clifton Heritage National Park Trail and Cabbage Beach

Go west early. Jitneys heading out along West Bay Street past Cable Beach reach the island’s far tip in roughly 45 to 60 minutes, and the Clifton Heritage National Park Trail rewards a cool morning start. Over about two to three hours you pass Lucayan archaeological sites, the stone ruins of a Loyalist-era plantation and the slave quarters behind it, ending at Sacred Space, where carved cedar figures of enslaved women face the sea. The water off the rocky shore here is clear enough for snorkeling if you bring a mask.

Ride back to downtown by early afternoon, then board one of the Prince George Wharf boats bound for Paradise Island and walk to Cabbage Beach. Roughly 3 kilometers of pale, soft sand stretch along the north shore, with fewer people the farther east you walk from the resort end. Waves can be strong and lifeguards are not always posted, so swim where you can see the bottom. Stay until the light turns gold, then catch a return boat before they thin out in the evening.

If you can squeeze in one more hour, seek out Primeval Forest National Park in southwestern New Providence, where wooden walkways lead past deep limestone sinkholes beneath old-growth hardwoods that almost no day visitor ever sees.

🙋 FAQCommon Questions

Yes, the Bahamas is easy to travel independently, since English is the official language and it is very safe outside a few Nassau neighborhoods at night, but it is expensive and has almost no hostel scene.

Budget for US$100 to 200 a night for a basic guesthouse room in Nassau or on Harbour Island; the Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and both are accepted everywhere. Inter-island travel means fast ferries (Nassau to Harbour Island in about 3 hours, roughly US$130 to 140 one way, and not every day), slower mail boats, or short flights. Book Out Island rooms ahead in the December to April high season.
Five to seven days lets you see Nassau and one Out Island in the Bahamas without rushing, while ten to fourteen days covers three island groups.

Give Nassau and Paradise Island 2 days, then 3 to 4 days on Exuma or Harbour Island with Eleuthera. Flights from Nassau to George Town take about 40 minutes and cost roughly US$90 to 200 one way, and the fast ferry to Harbour Island takes about 3 hours. With two weeks, add Andros for the barrier reef and blue holes or the Abacos for sailing. A 2-day trip works only if you stay on New Providence.
You can get around the Bahamas without a car in Nassau and on Harbour Island, but on most Out Islands, including Great Exuma and Eleuthera, you will need taxis or a rental.

In Nassau, jitney buses cost about US$1.25 to 1.50 a ride and cover downtown, Cable Beach and the west, while a water taxi crosses to Paradise Island for roughly US$4 to 6. On Harbour Island, walk or rent a golf cart for US$50 to 70 a day. On Great Exuma there are no public buses; car rental runs about US$70 to 90 a day, and a taxi from the airport to George Town costs around US$30.
The must-visits in the Bahamas are Nassau for history and culture, Exuma for the clearest water and the Swimming Pigs, and Harbour Island for Pink Sands Beach.

In Nassau, plan a day for the Queen’s Staircase, the National Art Gallery and Clifton Heritage National Park, plus a swim at Cabbage Beach. From George Town on Great Exuma, a full-day boat tour (about US$250 to 350) reaches Staniel Cay, the pigs and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. Pink Sands Beach is about 3 hours from Nassau by fast ferry. Divers should add the Andros Barrier Reef.
If time is short in the Bahamas, skip Freeport and Grand Bahama, the casinos and mega-resort strip of Paradise Island, and remote niche stops like Rum Cay or Bimini Road.

Freeport needs its own flight and offers resort sprawl that Nassau already covers; Lucayan National Park is good but not essential on a first trip. Bimini Road is a line of underwater limestone blocks that only rewards divers with a keen interest, and Rum Cay has few flights and little infrastructure. On a 3 to 5 day trip, put that time into one Out Island such as Exuma or Harbour Island instead.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that.
