You walk down the sandy path with your flip-flops in your hand, the casuarina needles soft underfoot, and the bay opens up flat and pale green, with barely a ripple at the edge. French Leave Beach sits on Eleuthera’s sheltered western shore, in the central part of Bahamas, a short hop from Governor’s Harbour. Arrive mid-morning on a weekday and you may share it with a few people and a dog. The water is calm, shallow and easy for swimming, though there are no waves worth surfing and the snorkeling is modest, mostly around the rocky ends. Facilities are thin, so carry water and shade. The grocery stores and cheap local plates are in town, and you get there by rental car or taxi. Sunset is the move. It suits slow-travelers and couples most, and will bore anyone chasing nightlife or surf.

  • Wet Season (June to October): Expect 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Days are longest, with roughly 13 hours of light in June. Hurricane risk peaks August to October, and some small guesthouses and eateries close.
  • Winter Fronts: Cold fronts between December and February can bring wind, rough surf, and water cooler than you expect.

The water is usually gentle and shallow near shore, but it faces the Atlantic side of the island, so winter fronts can bring surf and some pull near the edges. If waves look heavy, stay in the shallows or skip the swim. There are no lifeguards or flag systems, so you judge conditions yourself. Sun is the biggest issue. Shade is limited, so bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, and plenty of water, since there are no shops on the sand. Rocky patches can hide sea urchins, so reef shoes help.
