Backpacking in Bandarban to Ruma Trek
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 25, 2026

Most blogs sell Bandarban–Ruma as a “scenic transfer,” but on foot it’s a full-body trek where the road, the river, and the hills all fight for your attention. This route runs through the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh, linking the town of Bandarban with the river-hugging village of Ruma. Expect a long, sweaty day (or two shorter ones) of rolling asphalt, dirt tracks, and side trails through bamboo groves and patchy jungle, with trucks roaring past just as often as birdsong. It’s easy to reach the start by bus from Chattogram or Dhaka, which makes it tempting, but the heat, traffic, and distance hit harder than the elevation. Compared with treks deeper toward Boga Lake or Keokradong, this one is less wild, more lived-in, and better for testing your legs than chasing pure mountain drama.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Boga Lake (Boga Taal) — A mysterious, turquoise mountain lake cradled between steep cliffs; you’ll camp on its rim, swim in surprisingly cold water, and watch the surface turn molten at sunrise. It feels properly remote compared with crowded hill sites elsewhere.
  2. Ruma Bazaar and Marma villages — Small, authentic hill settlements where terrace fields, thatch houses and simple homestays still dominate; great for real cultural exchanges, local food (try bamboo-shoot dishes) and slow village-life photography that you won’t get on chartered trails.
  3. Ridge viewpoints / sea-of-clouds sunrises — Tight ridgelines above the valley produce dramatic dawns and a true “sea of clouds” effect on clear mornings. The wide, unobstructed vistas over Sangu valley are one of the hike’s postcard moments.

  4. Sangu River valley and riverbed walks — The trek alternates high forest and long, stony river stretches where you can wade, hop between boulders or take a local boat. That mix of river travel and hillside trekking gives the route a variety most single-aspect trails lack.
  5. Mossy bamboo forests, waterfalls and hill biodiversity — The trail threads dense subtropical jungle, bamboo groves and small cascades—good for butterflies, frogs and plenty of bird activity. The humid, layered forest vibe here is more jungle-like than the pine-and-rock treks you see elsewhere.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The Bandarban to Ruma Trek is a wild ride, but it’s manageable with the right mindset. Expect weather shifts; the sun can blaze, then clouds roll in, so pack a light rain jacket. The terrain varies—some stretches are steep and rocky, demanding focus on your footing. Navigation isn’t a nightmare, but a good map or GPS app is your best friend.

River crossings can be tricky after rain, so scout the best spots and take your time. Wildlife encounters are rare, but if you spot a snake or a curious monkey, keep your distance and don’t feed them.

Timing is key; start early to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the cooler morning air. A sturdy pair of hiking boots will save your ankles on uneven ground. Embrace the sweat and effort; the views from the ridges and the cold beer waiting at the end make every step worth it.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

The trek from Bandarban to Ruma is a raw, pulse-pounding adventure. Expect steep climbs that will leave your legs burning, but the payoff? Epic views that stretch for miles, where the horizon seems to kiss the sky. The best surprise? Stumbling upon a local village where the warmth of the people rivals the heat of the sun. Just a heads-up: pack extra snacks. You’ll need the fuel, and trust me, the trail can be relentless. But every drop of sweat is worth it for that first cold beer at the end.
