Everyone shows up to Oostende beach expecting some wild North Sea Ibiza; it’s not that. It’s Belgium’s most classic city beach, on the coast of West Flanders, a straight shot by train from Brussels and Ghent, and it behaves exactly like a city beach: convenient, busy, a bit chaotic, and surprisingly decent if you manage expectations. The sand is wide and clean enough, the water is cold but swimmable in season, and lifeguards plus clear zones make it less stressful than it looks. On sunny weekends it’s absolutely packed, with windbreaks and families turning the place into a low-rise maze, so solitude-seekers will hate it. Surf is hit-or-miss wind chop, nothing for serious riders, and there’s no real snorkel or dive appeal. The win: cheap friteries, supermarkets, and hostels close by.
