Backpacking in Belize International Film
👀 For curious travelersfestival ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

For years the Belize International Film Festival meant a November run of screenings in Belize City, with folding seats in the Bliss Institute and a crowd of filmmakers, students and curious locals. Today it is a hybrid event, run by the Film and Media Arts Unit of NICH (the National Institute of Culture and History) since 2003, with select screenings, a digital festival in April and a two-day in-person Caribbean Cinema Event at The Banks Resort on the Hummingbird Highway near Belmopan, in the interior of Belize. Expect air-conditioned rooms, the hum of projectors, humid jungle air outside and conversations that spill onto the grounds between films. The focus is Caribbean and Belizean cinema, so the audience is filmmakers, students and film-minded travelers rather than party crowds. You come away with stories you will not find in a multiplex. It suits curious, low-key travelers who like talking to creators. If you want dancing, camping and late-night stages, this is not that festival.

Ranked #6 festival in Belize
Why Belize International Film should be on your travel list

Belize International Film Festival gives backpackers a rare way into Belizean culture through the stories locals tell about themselves. Most visitors see reef, ruins and rum punch, and the screenings add context that a snorkel trip cannot. The two-day Caribbean Cinema Event at The Banks Resort is small enough that you end up chatting with directors, actors and crew over coffee, not watching them from behind a barrier. That access is the real draw. It also fits easily into a longer route, because the venue on the Hummingbird Highway sits between Belmopan and the Stann Creek District, so you can pair it with caves, waterfalls and jungle walks nearby. Temporary community forms fast here, because everyone is there for the same films and the same conversations.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  1. Caribbean Cinema Event at The Banks Resort: the two-day in-person weekend is the heart of the festival, with screenings and discussions set among the greenery of the Hummingbird Highway.
  2. Belizean short films: local filmmakers show work on Garifuna, Creole, Maya and Mestizo life, often made on tiny budgets and full of detail you will not see elsewhere.
  3. Caribbean regional cinema: films from neighboring islands and coasts put Belize in a wider Caribbean context, with accents, humor and music that shift from screen to screen.
  4. Filmmaker talks and Q&As: directors and crew answer questions after screenings, and the small crowd means you can keep talking afterward in the hallway or on the lawn.

For a first visit, the Caribbean Cinema Event at The Banks Resort is the best choice, because everything happens in one place and you meet the people behind the films.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Belmopan itself is the most practical place to sleep, since the in-person event happens at The Banks Resort on the Hummingbird Highway, a short taxi ride from town. The capital is quiet, safe and walkable by day, with guesthouses clustered near the central bus terminal and market. That cluster suits solo travelers: you can catch early buses, buy cheap meals nearby and get taxis easily, though evenings are sleepy and social life is limited.

San Ignacio, about 30 to 40 minutes west by road, is the better choice if you want other backpackers. Its compact center has a pedestrian street, cafés, bars and plenty of budget dorms and private rooms, and you can ride a bus or shared taxi to Belmopan each morning. It is safe to walk at night in the main area, and tour operators there make it easy to add cave and Maya site days around the festival.

Belize City is the third option, an hour or so east, and it works if you are arriving by water taxi or flight. Stay near the Marine Parade and Fort George area for the safest walking and a handful of budget beds, and take taxis after dark.

🍲 FoodEating & Drinking in Belize International Film

Expect the Caribbean Cinema Event to feel like a resort-hosted gathering, so food leans on catered plates and snack tables rather than a street-stall crowd. Local flavors still show up: stew chicken with rice, fried plantains, and johnnycakes or fry jacks at breakfast are the dishes to look for.

For a proper taste of the country, eat in Belmopan’s market area before or after screenings. Small comedors serve rice and beans with stewed meat, garnaches (crisp fried tortillas with beans and cheese) and panades (fried corn pockets filled with fish or beans) for a few dollars. Cool down with fresh watermelon or lime juice and a bottle of Belikin, the national beer, or a rum punch if the venue bar offers one.

Carry some cash for market stands and small cafés, since card machines are not universal, though resorts normally accept cards. Venue prices run higher than town prices, so a sensible move is to eat a filling local meal first and snack inside. Portions in Belizean eateries are generous, and splitting a plate is common and unremarkable.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Belize International Film Festival runs as a hybrid event for its 18th edition, from November 2025 to May 2026. A digital festival takes place in April 2026, and the in-person Caribbean Cinema Event runs for two days, April 17 and 18, 2026, at The Banks Resort on the Hummingbird Highway, Belmopan. Belmopan is about an hour by road from Belize City.
Attending Belize International Film Festival can cost very little, since the digital screenings and many events have been free or low-priced, roughly US$0 to 25. Your main spending is travel and a bed, with dorms around US$20 to 45 a night and buses US$3 to 12 per leg. A realistic total for a backpacker is about US$75 to 110 per day.
Belize International Film Festival does not generally require tickets far in advance, but check the NICH Film and Media Arts Unit announcements before you go, as in-person space at The Banks Resort is limited. The April 2026 digital festival can be watched online, so no travel is needed. The thing to book early is your bed in Belmopan or San Ignacio, ideally two to four weeks ahead.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Belize International Film Festival trips go wrong when travelers assume a big venue in Belize City, as in earlier years, and arrive at the wrong place. Check the current location and dates before you book a bed. I would plan the Belmopan weekend around the Hummingbird Highway, bring a light jacket for chilly screening rooms and leave time to talk with filmmakers.
