Backpacking in Trilha da Pedra Bonita
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 24, 2026

Most people hear “Pedra Bonita” and picture some brutal, all-day sufferfest above Rio, but this trail is more like a hard-earned viewpoint than an expedition. Trilha da Pedra Bonita sits inside Tijuca National Park, in Rio de Janeiro, and it gives you a front-row seat to Pedra da Gávea, São Conrado beach, and the hang gliders launching right below. The hike itself is short, around 40–60 minutes up, with steady but manageable climbing on dirt and stone steps, so beginners who are reasonably fit can grind it out. Humidity hits hard, and the forest stretch can feel like a sweaty stairmaster, but the access is easy by bus or Uber to São Conrado, especially compared with longer slogs like Pedra da Gávea or Pico da Tijuca, which demand more time, fitness, and logistics.

(Personal favorite — nothing beats seeing the gliders drift over São Conrado with the ocean below.)

  4. Exposed rock slab & photo spots — the final outcrop is a broad slab of rock perfect for photos and a little rock-scramble. It’s dramatic without needing technical gear, so you get that cliffside thrill without a full climb.
  5. Golden hour & quiet descents — late afternoon light makes the hills, ocean and paragliders glow; crowds thin out and the trail feels peaceful. Perfect time for mellow sunsets, cooler temperatures, and better photos—just bring a headlamp for the walk back if you linger.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: The dry season from May to September is your best bet—clear skies and minimal rain keep the trail firm and the views sharp. Avoid the wet season (December to March) when slippery mud and sudden downpours can turn the hike into a slog.

  • Temperature: Expect daytime highs around 22-28°C (72-82°F) during the dry months, perfect for sweating it out without overheating. Nights can dip to 15°C (59°F), so pack a light layer for the early morning start.

  • Daylight Hours: June and July offer shorter days, roughly 10-11 hours of light, so start early to maximize your summit time. Longer days in September give you more wiggle room but bring the sunblock.

  • Seasonal Activities: Winter months (June-August) coincide with local festivals and outdoor events in Rio, adding cultural spice to your trip. The trail itself stays consistent, but the vibe shifts with the city’s pulse.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike during July and August due to high demand. Booking ahead or aiming for shoulder months like May or September can save you some reais.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail early on a weekday in late August—cool air, fewer crowds, and a sunset that rewards every step of the climb.

Difficulty Level: This trail is generally considered moderate. While it’s not overly technical, there are some steep sections and rocky paths that require a bit of effort.

Starting Point: The trailhead is located in the Tijuca National Park. To get there by public transport, you can take a bus from Copacabana or Ipanema to the Barra da Tijuca area. Look for the “Jardim Botânico” bus line, which will drop you off near the entrance to the park. From there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead.

Major Landmarks Along the Route:
  • Pedra Bonita: The main highlight, offering stunning panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro, including the coastline and the surrounding mountains.
  • Mirante: A viewpoint along the way that’s perfect for a quick break and some great photo ops.

Type of Terrain and Scenery: The terrain varies, with rocky paths and some steep inclines. You’ll find yourself surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, rocky outcrops, and breathtaking vistas as you ascend. The views get better the higher you climb, so keep that camera handy.

You might spot some local wildlife, like monkeys and various bird species, especially if you’re quiet and patient. ⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The Trilha da Pedra Bonita is a rewarding trek, but it demands respect for its realities. The trail is well-marked, yet steep in sections, so keep your footing steady and your pace consistent. Expect some rocky patches that require careful navigation, especially after rain when the ground can be slippery.

Weather can shift quickly. Mornings might start cool, but the sun can blaze by midday. Dress in layers and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Wildlife is part of the experience, but encounters are rare. If you spot a snake or a curious monkey, admire from a distance—don’t feed them.

Timing is key; early starts help you avoid the heat and crowds. With the right preparation, you’ll find that the effort pays off with breathtaking views and a well-deserved cold drink at the summit.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

The view from Pedra Bonita is a jaw-dropper, a sweeping panorama of Rio that makes every step worth it. But be ready for the crowds; this trail can feel like a highway on weekends. If you can time your hike for early morning or late afternoon, you’ll snag the beauty without the bustle. Embrace the sweat, soak in the sights, and remember: the journey is just as thrilling as the destination.

✈️ When did I visit Brazil?
Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
