Backpacking in Cabo Frio
👍 Recommendedcity ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 19, 2026

Cabo Frio was a salt-works and fishing town, with a fort guarding the coast from pirates, and today it is a beach resort packed with Brazilian families in summer. It sits in Brazil’s Região dos Lagos, east of Rio de Janeiro. I stepped off the bus and smelled grilled fish and sunscreen drifting from the canal, with fishing boats rocking beside the colorful stalls. Skip the downtown shopping streets. Spend your time on Praia do Forte, the canal and the boat trips. A first day could mean beach in the morning, canal at sunset.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #17 city in Brazil
Why visitors keep coming back

Cabo Frio works for backpackers because the water is the point: the beaches around Praia do Forte have white sand and clear, cool Atlantic water that few Rio-state beaches match. It is also an easy base for the surrounding coast, with hostels clustered near the Passagem canal district, so you can walk to restaurants and the waterfront without a taxi. Nightlife is relaxed, mostly bars and live music along the canal. The town fills up in January and carnival, so it suits a short beach stop of a couple of days better than a long cultural stay.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Praia do Forte: a long, wide white-sand beach with clear water and steady waves, ideal for swimming and walking. Go in the morning before it fills. Free, 2 to 4 hours.
  2. Forte São Mateus: a 17th-century fort at the mouth of the canal, built to defend the coast against pirates. Visit in the morning for the light over the sea. Entry is roughly US$1 to 2, about 1 hour.
  3. Passagem Canal (Canal do Itajuru): the historic waterfront district, where fishing boats moor and restaurants serve fresh seafood. Best at late afternoon. Free to stroll, 1 to 2 hours.
  4. Boat tour (Ilha do Japonês): small boats leave from the canal to visit islands and calm bays for snorkeling. Go in the morning when the sea is clearest. About US$15 to 30, 2 to 3 hours.
  5. Morro da Guia: a small hill with a chapel from 1740 and views over

  6. Dunas do Peró: white dunes next to Peró Beach, good for sandboarding and walking. Go early or late to avoid the heat. Free to visit, 1 to 2 hours.
  7. Rua dos Biquínis: a street of beachwear shops that is a local institution. Best in the evening. Free to browse, about 1 hour.
Start with Praia do Forte in the morning, because the sand is quiet, the water is calm and the crowds arrive after lunch. For day trips, Arraial do Cabo, Búzios and the Peró area are all easy to reach.

  • Praia do Forte: Long, flat, calm and ideal for swimming. Easy on foot from the center, so no need to go elsewhere for a first beach day.
  • Prainha and Ogiva: Quieter, residential, with a few good sunset spots. Worth a short ride, not a whole day.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

December to March is the hot, busy stretch, with highs of 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F), long days and the highest prices.
  • Summer (Dec to Mar): Beaches packed, dorm and boat prices peak, especially around Christmas, New Year and Carnival.
  • Autumn (Apr to Jun): Highs of 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F), calm seas, fewer people and lower prices.
  • Winter (Jul to Sep): Highs of 23 to 26°C (73 to 79°F), cooler nights around 17°C (63°F), good for hiking and cheap beds, though the sea is chilly.

Book Carnival and New Year beds months ahead; weekdays outside summer are far cheaper.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Centro and Passagem are the best bases, with the most hostels and budget guesthouses, all in walking distance of the bus stops, restaurants and the canal. Evenings are lively but not rowdy, and the main streets are busy enough to feel comfortable after dark. Expect some music noise on summer weekends, so pack earplugs. Praia do Forte is the second choice: slightly pricier, quieter and closer to the sand, with fewer dorm options. Avoid sleeping far out near Peró unless you have a car, since transport back at night is limited. Book ahead for December to February and Carnival, when even basic beds sell out.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get around Cabo Frio

The center around the canal and Praia do Forte is flat and easy on foot, but beaches like Peró and Ogiva are too far to walk comfortably in the heat. Traffic jams badly on summer weekends, and buses are frequent but slow.
  • Walking: Best option for Centro, Passagem and Praia do Forte. Free and faster than any vehicle on crowded days.
  • Local buses: Cheap at about US$1 to 1.50 per ride, running from early morning until roughly 10 pm. Good for Peró and the bus station. Slow in summer, and routes are confusing, so use a map app.
  • Taxis and ride apps: Uber and 99 usually cost US$3 to 8 for most city trips. Worth it at night and for beaches farther out, and split between three people they beat buses.
  • Mototaxis: About US$1.50 to 4 for short hops. Fast, but I would skip them unless you are comfortable with

  • Intercity buses to Arraial do Cabo: Around US$1.50 to 2, about 30 to 40 minutes. Do this by bus, not taxi.
Renting a car is not worth the cost and parking stress for a short stay.

🍲 FoodLocal Flavors for Backpackers

Seafood leads here, and the salty Lagoa de Araruama region adds its own touches. Try peixe frito and lula (squid) fresh from the docks, plus moqueca and camarão with garlic. Grilled fish plates with rice, farofa and vinaigrette feel like the town’s everyday meal and cost around US$8 to 15.
For a budget bite, stick to the Mercado do Peixe area and canal-side stalls, where you will find fish pastéis and fried snacks. Beach kiosks sell cold caipirinhas and água de coco, with prices rising in summer. Evenings centered around Passagem offer pizzerias and casual bars with live music.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Cabo Frio is a busy beach town where petty theft is the main concern, not violence. Keep phones and cameras tucked away on crowded beaches and during summer events, and never leave bags unattended on the sand. Central streets are fine in the evening, but avoid empty back streets and dark stretches of beach late at night. Solo travelers do well by taking a ride app home after dark. Beach vendors can be persistent, so a calm “não, obrigado” works. Check for rip currents and flags before swimming at Peró.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Two to three days is enough for Cabo Frio itself. Spend one day on Praia do Forte and the old center, another at Peró and the dunes, and add a third for Arraial do Cabo, 30 to 40 minutes away by bus for US$1.50 to 2.
Yes, Cabo Frio is reasonably comfortable for solo backpackers, with petty theft the main risk. Keep valuables out of sight on beaches, use a ride app (US$3 to 8) after dark, and stay in the central Passagem area.
Cabo Frio is known for white-sand beaches, clear water and its salt-lagoon coast on the Costa do Sol. Its Praia do Forte and Forte São Mateus draw visitors, as does nearby Arraial do Cabo for snorkeling, and seafood plates cost US$8 to 15.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Give Cabo Frio two nights. That covers the beach, the canal and one boat trip without running out of things to do. I would pick the shoulder season, since January is crowded and pricey.

✈️ When did I visit Brazil?
Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
