Backpacking in Praia da Barra do Camacho
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #22
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 22, 2026

Your toes sink into cool, squeaky sand while a lone fishing boat coughs across the lagoon and a salty mud smell drifts in from the mangroves. This is Praia da Barra do Camacho, on Santa Catarina’s southern coast, somewhere between “forgotten” and “could use a signpost.” For backpackers, it’s quiet, cheap, and mostly clean, with mellow waves better for wading than glory surfing, and zero snorkel action. Think sleepy village vibe, a couple of basic bars, and simple pousadas instead of hostels. Compared with nearby Garopaba or Guarda do Embaú, it’s less pretty, less crowded, and way more “I’m here because I overshot my bus stop” than “bucket list,” but that’s exactly why I ended up staying two nights longer than planned.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #22 beach in Brazil
The unique appeal for travelers

Praia da Barra do Camacho is one of those essential stops that backpackers swear by. Why? First off, the laid-back atmosphere feels like a warm hug after days of trekking. You can kick back without breaking the bank, thanks to its affordability. The social scene is buzzing, where you can swap stories over a caipirinha or two, making it a perfect spot to connect with fellow travelers.

But it’s not just about the swimming; this beach serves as a vital connector along the coastal route. It’s a place to recharge, refuel, and maybe even plot your next adventure. So, if you’re passing through, don’t just wave at the waves—stop and soak it all in.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  • Wade the shifting sandbar and channel — At Barra do Camacho the mouth often forms a shallow sandbar that changes with the tide; walking it feels like moving through a tiny, ever-changing landscape of pools and sandbanks, great for low-tide exploring and dramatic photos (daytime only, avoid the channel when the tide comes in).
  • Snorkel the rocky fringe and tide pools — This spot isn’t just open sand: rocky outcrops and pools hide small reef fish, crabs and bright algae. Low tide reveals clear, shallow pools that are perfect for close-up snorkeling and discovering critters you won’t see on plain sandy beaches — my personal favorite because it’s like a miniature aquarium you can walk into.

  • Catch the local break or bodyboard in the surfy pockets — When the swell lines up, Barra do Camacho throws small, punchy breaks off the rocks that are excellent for shortboards and bodyboards; not a long, groomed point but deliciously fun waves for people who like quick, steep rides instead of tame rollers.
  • Climb the headland for sunset and stargazing — A short scramble up the nearby headland gives a sweeping view back along the coast; it’s one of the best sunset perches here, and after dark the light pollution is low enough for very satisfying stargazing — calm, social, and photo-ready (day → sunset → night for stars).
  • Watch local fishers and sample fresh beachside treats — Rather than big tourist joints, Barra do Camacho has small-scale fishing activity and occasional vendors or pop-ups where you can try freshly grilled fish or local snacks right on the sand. It’s an authentic, low-key way to connect with the place — ideal late afternoon into early evening (nightlife is quiet here; think relaxed bites and conversations rather than clubbing).

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Weather: The dry season from May to September is your best bet—less rain, more sun. Expect highs around 22-26°C (72-79°F), perfect for beach lounging without melting into a puddle.

  • Temperature: Water temps hover around 20-23°C (68-73°F) in winter, warming to 25-27°C (77-81°F) in summer. If you’re not a fan of chilly dips, avoid June-August.

  • Daylight Hours: Longer days from November to February mean more beach time, but also more sunburn risk. Shorter winter days limit your golden hours but keep things cooler.

  • Crowds: Peak season (December to March) brings locals and tourists alike, turning the beach into a lively, sometimes cramped, party zone. Off-season offers solitude but fewer amenities.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer hosts local festivals and water sports, adding cultural spice.

  • Price Fluctuations: Expect inflated prices during summer holidays and festivals. Off-season means better deals on lodging and food, but some services might scale back.

Pro-tip: Aim for shoulder months like April or October—mild weather, manageable crowds, and prices that won’t make your wallet cry.

Avoid the overly commercialized areas; they’re about as inviting as a soggy sandwich. Embrace the local scene, and you’ll leave with more than just sunburn; you’ll have memories that stick.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Praia da Barra do Camacho is generally a chill spot for beach lovers. The waves can get a bit feisty, especially during high tide, so keep an eye on the surf conditions. Locals tend to swim where the flags are green, and you’ll want to follow their lead.

Jellyfish occasionally pop by, but they’re not the main attraction. Just be mindful of your surroundings. Sun exposure can be intense, so slather on that sunscreen, especially as the day heats up.

As for theft, keep your valuables close. A good rule of thumb? If it looks too good to leave unattended, it probably is. Enjoy the beach vibes, but stay savvy!

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Praia da Barra do Camacho is a slice of paradise where the waves are as friendly as the locals. You’ll find yourself sipping coconut water while watching surfers dance on the horizon. Just be ready for the trek to get there; the road is a bit of a rollercoaster. But hey, the adventure is half the fun, right?

✈️ When did I visit Brazil?
Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
