Praia do Rosa sits inside an environmental protection area (APA da Baleia Franca), so building heights and signage are restricted, and that is why you won’t find a single high-rise here. The beach lies in Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil, roughly an hour’s drive south of Florianópolis’s mainland neighbors, on a curved 3 km bay. The sand is clean, the surf is reliable, and the cliffs and dune ridges are the best scenery in the area. Swimming is only fair, because the shore break and rip currents get serious on big days. Skip the central strip after dark in peak summer, when it turns into a pricey crowd. Hostels and pousadas are scattered up the hills, and cheap food sits a short walk back from the beach. I still hear the dry rattle of wind through the sea-grape bushes on the dune path before the sea comes into view. Compared with nearby Garopaba, Rosa is smaller, quieter and far more surf-focused.

  • Summer (Dec to Feb): Peak season, with highs of 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F), warm sea around 23 to 25°C (73 to 77°F) and about 14 hours of daylight. Beaches and streets fill, and lodging costs climb sharply around Christmas, New Year and Carnival.
  • Autumn (Mar to May): Highs of 24 to 27°C (75 to 81°F), thinner crowds and prices that drop quickly. Swell builds, which suits surfers.
  • Winter (Jun to Aug): Highs of 17 to 21°C (63 to 70°F), cool nights, around 10 hours of daylight and the cheapest beds. Whales are off the coast from July to November.
  • Spring (Sep to Nov): Highs of 21 to 25°C (70 to 77°F), whale watching at its best and quiet streets before the December rush.
Arrive in late March or October for warm days, fewer people and room rates well below the holiday peak.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Praia do Rosa

Praia do Rosa is a well-used, relaxed beach, and most visits pass without incident.
It is an exposed surf beach facing open Atlantic swell, so waves are punchy and rip currents form, especially when the swell is big in autumn and winter. Swim where locals and lifeguards do, usually in front of the central section, and watch for the channels of darker, choppier water that pull outward. Beginners should keep to the whitewater or take a lesson. Flags and lifeguard posts operate in peak summer, less so off-season.
The sun is strong from October to March, and midday glare off the sand burns quickly. Weather can swing from clear to drizzly within hours.
Petty theft is uncommon, but phones and wallets left on the sand while you surf are a poor bet. Leave valuables at your lodging and the beach is easy.

Fly into Florianópolis (FLN), then drive south about 75 km (47 mi) to Praia do Rosa, which takes roughly 1.5 hours via the BR-101 and the turnoff at Imbituba. Buses from Florianópolis run to Imbituba or Garopaba for around US$5 to 10, and from there a local bus, taxi or app ride covers the last stretch for about US$10 to 25. A rental car makes things easier, since the village is spread out.
Surfing is the main draw, with consistent beach breaks that work for beginners on smaller days and for experienced surfers when the swell rises from autumn through winter. Swimming is fine on calm days in front of the central beach, but rip currents can form, so stay near lifeguards.
