Backpacking in Praia das Conchas
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #20
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 19, 2026

Praia das Conchas sits inside a gated condominium, so you can only enter through the Iporanga gate from 7 am, and parking is limited. It lies in Guarujá, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, on the road toward Bertioga. I took the Bertioga road and the guard at the gate waved me through after a quick check, which felt oddly like entering a private club. The sand is crushed shell, the water calm and emerald, and there are no kiosks, so bring food. Skip it for nightlife. Come if you want quiet.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #20 beach in Brazil
Why Praia das Conchas should be on your travel list

Praia das Conchas earns its stop because it is tiny, under 200 meters, and almost never feels like the packed beaches of Guarujá. The water is calm and emerald, so it suits floating and easy swimming rather than surf. The rock pools on the right side give you something to poke around in at low tide. Its position inside the Iporanga condominium keeps the crowds thin, though about 80 parking spaces shared with Praia de São Pedro fill up on weekends. It works as a quiet pause on the road toward Bertioga.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Praia das Conchas

  1. The shell-covered sand: the beach is carpeted in broken shells instead of fine powder, which crunches underfoot and gives the place its name. Wear sandals, because it can be rough on bare feet.
  2. The emerald calm water: the cove stays gentle, so you can wade and swim without fighting waves. It suits a slow, floating kind of afternoon.
  3. The rock pools on the right side: explore them at low tide for small marine life and shallow pools that are good for a look around.
  4. Snorkeling the calm edges: bring your own mask and check the water near the rocks, where the clear shallows are easiest to see into. There is no rental on the beach.
  5. A self-catered beach picnic: with no kiosks, you pack your own food and drinks, which keeps the beach uncluttered and quiet. Take your trash out with you.

Praia das Conchas needs about two to three hours for everything above, or a relaxed half day if you bring lunch.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

The best window is April to June or September to October, when days run about 22 to 27°C (72 to 81°F) and the Guarujá coast is dry enough for the calm emerald water to stay clear.
  • Summer (December to March): Hot and humid at 26 to 32°C (79 to 90°F), with afternoon downpours, long daylight, and the heaviest crowds and highest prices around Christmas, New Year and Carnival.
  • Autumn and Spring: Mild, mostly sunny, easier parking and lower rates.
  • Winter (June to August): Cool at 15 to 23°C (59 to 73°F), quiet, too chilly for many swimmers, with the cheapest beds nearby.
Arrive early on summer weekends, because the roughly 80 shared parking spaces fill up fast.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Stay in central Guarujá, about 22 km away, because Praia das Conchas sits inside the gated Iporanga condominium where backpackers have no lodging options. Pitangueiras and Astúrias are the practical bases. Both have the beachfront restaurants, supermarkets, bus connections and the widest range of budget beds, with dorms and simple guesthouses typically US$15 to 40 a night, and more in January. Pitangueiras is livelier at night and easier for meeting other travelers. Astúrias is quieter and a little cheaper. Another option is staying in Santos and crossing by ferry, which suits anyone wanting city nightlife and museums.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Praia das Conchas is a small, gated and calm beach, so the main risks are ordinary ones. The water is sheltered and gentle with almost no surf, which makes it comfortable for easy swimming. Broken shells cover the sand, so wear sandals, and watch your footing on the slippery rocks around the rock pools on the right side. Shade is limited and the sun is strong, so bring water and sunscreen because there are no kiosks. Guards at the condominium gate keep it orderly, though keep valuables with you.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Getting to Praia das Conchas takes about 40 to 60 minutes by car from central Guarujá, roughly 22 km along the road toward Bertioga, and you enter through the Iporanga condominium gate from 7 am. From São Paulo the drive is about 1.5 to 2 hours via the Imigrantes or Anchieta highways, longer on summer weekends. Parking is limited to about 80 spaces shared with Praia de São Pedro, so arrive early on weekends. Without a car, a ride-hailing app or taxi from Guarujá is the practical choice, typically US$15 to 25 each way.
Praia das Conchas is best for swimming, since the emerald water is calm and sheltered and the beach is under 200 m long. Surfing is not an option because there is almost no wave energy. Snorkeling is possible around the rock pools on the right side in clear conditions, though it is small and best treated as a casual look rather than a dive trip. Wear water shoes, as broken shells cover the sand and the rocks can be slippery.
Entry to Praia das Conchas is generally free, but you must pass through the Iporanga condominium gate, which opens to visitors from 7 am. Parking is the main cost, so check on arrival for any fee, and spaces are limited to about 80 shared with Praia de São Pedro. There are no beach kiosks, so bring water and snacks, which keeps your spending near zero. A rideshare from Guarujá may run US$15 to 25 each way if you have no car.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Praia das Conchas is a half-day stop, and I would not stay longer, since there are no kiosks and the beach is tiny. Arrive when the gate opens, pack food and water, and move on toward Bertioga or São Pedro afterward.

✈️ When did I visit Brazil?
Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
