The zoo sits inside the same grounds as a botanical-style Atlantic Forest remnant, and its large Safari section is a drive-through you can only enter by car or the park’s own shuttle. It lies in the south of São Paulo city, in Brazil’s biggest metropolis, near the Água Funda district. I walked from the Jabaquara metro and bus link instead of paying for a taxi, and it worked. Skip the gift shops. Go for the big aviary and the tidy Atlantic Forest species.

São Paulo Zoological Park holds one of the largest animal collections in Latin America, spread across about 82 hectares of Atlantic Forest remnant, so it works as a real half-day break from the concrete. 🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in Brazil

Vila Mariana and Paraíso are the best bases, both on the metro blue line with a bus or short ride south to the zoo in the Água Funda district. Both neighborhoods are walkable after dark on main streets, packed with cheap bakeries and bars, and have several hostels frequented by solo travelers. Consolação and the Avenida Paulista area cost a little more but put you in the middle of nightlife, museums and the best social scene, with direct metro access. Staying near the zoo itself means very few options and an empty feel after dark, so most backpackers choose to commute in.

São Paulo Zoological Park has a small night-time and educational program that most day visitors never notice, and the forest bird life around the lake is better than the signed exhibits. I would bring water, arrive at opening and take the shaded trails first.
