Most people picture Borovets as a concrete ski factory, all package tours and bad pizza. Parts of it are exactly that, but the village sits high in the Rila Mountains, about an hour south of Sofia, wrapped in dense pine that smells sharp and cold at dusk. For backpackers it’s a trade: easy trail access, cheap off-season beds, and quick hits of alpine air versus a resorty strip, quiet, early nights, and social life that depends heavily on your guesthouse. Compared with nearby Samokov it’s less local, more scenic; compared with Rila Monastery it’s less spiritual, more practical as a base for day hikes and ridge walks.
