The beach sits on the northeast coast of São Vicente in Cabo Verde, a short ride from Mindelo. The sand is pale and fairly clean, the bay is sheltered, and the water is easy for a lazy swim, though snorkeling is modest and there is no real surf.   • November to June (dry, trade-wind season): Dry days with highs of 25 to 29°C (77 to 84°F) and sea around 22 to 25°C (72 to 77°F). Winds from February to May keep it cool but suit windsurfers and kiteboarders.
  • July to October (hot, humid season): Air reaches 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F) and the sea warms to 25 to 27°C (77 to 81°F). Brief showers come mostly in August and September, and the water is calmest and best for swimming.
  • Daylight: Roughly 11 to 13 hours all year, so evenings arrive early.
  • Crowds and prices: Quiet most of the year. The town fills and beds cost more during the Festival da Baía das Gatas, held around the August full moon, when rooms book out weeks ahead (rates rise by about €10 to 30 a night).
Book August beds early, or come in the first half of July for the same warm water without the crowd.

You will find guesthouses, a few small apartment blocks and simple rooms, mostly €25 to 60 a night. Dorm beds are scarce here, so solo travelers meet people in the beachfront restaurants and at the windsurf and kite schools rather than in hostel common rooms. Mindelo is also better for restaurants, ATMs and supermarkets. Many backpackers split their time, sleeping in town and spending days at the beach. Baía das Gatas is one of São Vicente’s calmest places to swim, thanks to a natural rock-reef barrier that shelters a shallow, almost pool-like lagoon beside the village. Locals and families swim here daily, and rip currents are rarely a concern inside the lagoon. Outside the reef the Atlantic gets rougher, and the northeast trade winds can stir chop, so stay inside the barrier unless you are an experienced swimmer. Rocks and sea urchins sit near the reef edge, so reef shoes help when wading. Shade is thin and the sun is strong all year, so bring a hat and reapply sunscreen often.
