Praia da Laginha is the city beach of Mindelo, on São Vicente island in Cabo Verde, and it is best known for its pale golden sand right at the edge of town, with Monte Cara’s profile sitting over the far end of the bay. It is clean for an urban beach and the water is usually calm and good for swimming, though there is no real surf and snorkeling is average. Weekends and late afternoons get crowded with locals, and beachfront cafes lean pricey compared with the cheap lunch spots a few streets inland. Guesthouses and hostels are a short walk away.   • November to June (dry, cooler): Mindelo’s best beach weather, with highs of 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F) and almost no rain. Trade winds blow harder from December to March, so mornings on the sand beat afternoons.
  • July to October (hot, humid): Sea and air both warm up, with highs of 28 to 31°C (82 to 88°F). Showers are brief and rare on São Vicente, and the water is at its most inviting for swimming.
  • February (Carnival): Mindelo’s Carnival packs the city and the beach with locals. Rooms book out and prices rise by roughly 20 to 40%.
  • Daylight: Roughly 11 hours in December and 13 hours in June, so evening beach time is reliable year-round.

Waves are small and the water is usually gentle, though wind can kick up chop in winter afternoons. Rips are not a typical concern here, but stay within the busy swimming area and avoid going far out. Sun is strong all year, so bring reflective protection and shade for the middle of the day. Weekends fill with locals playing football and volleyball, which is a good sign of where it feels comfortable. Petty theft happens in any town beach scene, so keep phones and cameras with you rather than leaving them unattended on the sand while you swim. After dark, stick to the lit promenade and main streets.
