Backpacking in Botum Sakor
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 20, 2026

Most online blurbs still sell Botum Sakor National Park as untouched jungle, but on the ground you’ll find a patchwork: real forest and wildlife corridors broken up by plantations, roads, and controversial developments. It sits on the southwest coast of Cambodia in Koh Kong Province, forming the lower chunk of the Cardamom region. For backpackers, it’s raw and inconsistent: some rewarding river and jungle hikes, mangroves, gibbon calls at dawn, and moody coastal scenery, but also logged edges, limited trails, and wildlife that’s more “possible” than “likely.” Access is awkward, public transport thin, and you usually enter via an eco-lodge or community project, which bumps costs beyond rock-bottom. Fees and permits are often bundled into stays. Compared with nearby Cardamom hotspots like Chi Phat or Tatai, Botum Sakor feels wilder on the map but less cohesive, with fewer budget beds, more silence, and almost no crowds.

  • Lowland evergreen forest — One of the park’s big attractions is its patch of relatively intact lowland rainforest, rare in coastal Cambodia. Tall trees, thick undergrowth and a humid, green silence make it a real contrast to the beaches and townships nearby.
  • Secluded beaches and rocky headlands — The park’s coast along the Gulf of Thailand has quiet stretches of sand and rocky promontories where you can walk for hours without seeing another person. Great for sunsets, tide pools and getting away from the usual tourist spots.
  • Mangroves and estuaries — Extensive mangrove fringes and river mouths act as nurseries for fish and attract lots of waders and kingfishers. Boat trips or easy shoreline walks here are top for close-up nature viewing and photographing birdlife.

  • Freshwater wetlands and peat swamps — Pocketed wetlands inside the park host specialist plants and waterbirds and feel very different from the dry forest. These habitats are increasingly rare and give the park extra ecological value.
  • Wildlife watching — The park is habitat for a variety of mammals and primates (including sightings reported of Asian elephants, macaques and other forest mammals), plus surprisingly rich small mammal and reptile life. Sightings aren’t guaranteed—patience, quiet and a local guide help a lot.
  • Birdwatching hotspot — Because Botum Sakor mixes coast, wetlands and forest, you get a wide range of species: shorebirds and seabirds, forest songbirds and raptors. Migratory seasons are especially rewarding.
  • Hiking tracks and ridge viewpoints — Trails and old logging roads cut through different habitats and lead to small ridgelines with good views over forest and coast. They’re often lightly used, so expect a rugged, off-the-beaten-path feel rather than polished trail infrastructure.

  • Crowds: Botum Sakor is off the beaten path, so crowds are light year-round. However, the dry season sees a slight uptick in visitors, especially around December and January holidays.

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry months are ideal for hiking, wildlife watching, and boat tours. The wet season limits outdoor activities due to slippery trails and swollen rivers, which can be dangerous.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs rise modestly during the dry season’s peak months. Booking ahead is wise to avoid last-minute price hikes, especially around holidays.

Pro-tip: Aim for late November or early December to catch dry trails, manageable temperatures, and fewer tourists—perfect for preserving your energy and budget for the park’s best moments.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Botum Sakor National Park has a raw, untamed vibe that feels like stepping into another world. The best surprise? The wildlife—watch for the elusive sun bears and playful macaques. But don’t underestimate the heat; it can drain your energy fast. Bring plenty of water and plan your hikes for early morning or late afternoon. Embrace the quiet moments; they’re what make this place special. It’s all about savoring the experience, not racing through it.
