Backpacking in Stratford Theatre
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Rush tickets and weekday matinees are how experienced theatergoers see Stratford Festival Theatre without paying full price. The theater sits on the Avon River in Stratford, in southwestern Ontario, Canada, west of Toronto. Its thrust stage puts actors close enough that you hear boot soles on timber. At the interval I paid about US$4 for a butter tart from the lobby counter, flaky, sticky, faintly burnt at the edges, and it beat the souvenir mugs. Crowds thin on weekdays, and the Avon’s swans keep the lawns lively. Spend a first day on a matinee, then a riverside walk before an evening show.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 attraction in Canada
Why Stratford Theatre should be on your travel list

Stratford Festival Theatre is North America’s largest classical repertory company home, and its 1,800-seat thrust stage (the Festival stage) makes even the back rows feel close. Productions run roughly from spring to autumn, so you can see Shakespeare, a musical and a new Canadian work within a couple of days. The Avon River setting adds a gentle, walkable evening ritual of picnics and swans before curtain. For a backpacker, it is a rare chance to see world-class acting at a fair price, and a cultural stop that breaks up a Southern Ontario route between Toronto and the Great Lakes.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. The Festival Stage: the thrust stage that opened the theater, with seating wrapped around three sides so actors enter through the audience.
  2. Shakespeare productions: the company’s core work, staged with trained voices and strong physical detail.
  3. Backstage tours: guided visits to the costume, props and workshop areas where the company builds each season’s shows.
  4. Avon River lawns: swans, willow shade and picnic spots just outside the doors, ideal before an evening show.
  5. Lobby butter tarts and coffee: a simple interval snack that fits the theater’s cozy, Ontario character.
  6. Pre-show talks: short lectures that explain the staging and context of that day’s play.
  7. Tom Patterson Theatre: a smaller riverside venue nearby for more intimate and experimental work.
For a first visit, a Shakespeare matinee on the Festival Stage is the best choice.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Festival Season (April to October): The theatres run roughly from April to late October, with the densest program from June to September. Days reach 22 to 28°C (72 to 82°F) in summer, and evenings by the Avon River cool to 12 to 16°C (54 to 61°F).
  • Peak Summer (July and August): Crowds are largest, and lodging in town costs the most.
  • Fall (September and October): Temperatures sit at 8 to 18°C (46 to 64°F), the maple color is good, and rooms get cheaper.
  • Winter (November to March): The theatres are closed, daytime highs hover around -5 to 0°C (23 to 32°F), and snow is common.
Book Wednesday matinees in May or September for cheaper seats and thinner crowds.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Stratford Theatre

Stratford Festival Theatre catches travelers out when they arrive on the day expecting a seat. Shows sell out, especially weekends. Check the schedule, book a weekday matinee, and leave time for the river afterward. I would pick a Shakespeare over a musical here.
