Highland Paradise Cultural Centre sits on the forested hillside above Arorangi, on the west coast of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. It is the former mountain village of the Tinomana chiefly line, and descendants of that family still run it. Be honest with yourself about the format: the night program is a set dinner and dance show, so it draws tour groups and costs more than a plate at the night markets. It is also more intimate than the big resort shows, and the history behind it is real. The strongest part is the walk through the old settlement, where guides explain what happened on these terraces before missionaries arrived.
