Backpacking in Učka Mountain Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most blogs sell Učka Mountain Trail as a gentle coastal stroll; it isn’t. The main ridge route kicks your legs with long, rocky climbs and surprise-steep sections that feel more alpine than seaside. Učka sits above the Kvarner Gulf in northern Croatia, just inland from Opatija and Rijeka, where forested slopes rocket straight out of the Adriatic. The trail rewards you with big, wind-whipped views from Vojak summit, dense beech and chestnut forest, and that surreal moment when you see both Istria and the islands in one sweep. It’s medium-length but feels longer because of the constant up-and-down, and summer heat can hammer you. Public transport to trailheads is workable but fiddly compared with, say, Risnjak or Platak, which are better signed and more “official.” Still, Učka feels wilder, cheaper, and far less choreographed than Croatia’s headline hikes.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  • Vojak Peak (1,401 m) — the obvious highlight: the highest point on Učka with shockingly wide views. On a clear day you can see the Kvarner islands, Rijeka and even the distant Alps; sunrise or late-afternoon light makes the whole coastline glow.
  • Kvarner Bay Viewpoints — several cliff-side overlooks along the trail drop straight toward the sea, offering that rare sea-from-the-mountain perspective. Seeing islands like Krk, Cres and Lošinj clustered below is what separates Učka from inland ridge hikes.
  • Učka Ridge and Karst Escarpments — exposed limestone ridgelines and dramatic escarpments give the route a rugged, almost alpine feel despite being so close to the Adriatic. The contrast between sheer rock faces and the blue sea is pure postcard material.

  • Ancient Beech and Pine Forests — shady, mossy sections threaded through the trail feel like a different world from the dry coast. In spring you’ll get carpets of wildflowers and a ton of butterflies — a nice counterpoint to the rocky viewpoints.
  • Pastures, Stone Huts and Local Flavor — scattered high-mountain meadows, old shepherd’s huts and seasonal grazing give the hike a cultural edge. You’ll pass simple stone buildings and grazed slopes that hint at the mountain’s pastoral history — and sometimes local cheese sellers or friendly hikers sharing tips.
