Backpacking in Ciudad Metal
👀 For curious travelersfestival ranked #15
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Ciudad Metal suits metalheads willing to improvise, and anyone curious about Cuba’s underground scene. Casual travelers who want beaches and salsa will find little here. The festival takes place in Santa Clara, in central Cuba, with its main stage in the city center. A woman renting me a room once told me, “Bring cash, the machines don’t talk to foreign cards.” She was right. Bring all your money in hand, book your bed weeks ahead because rooms fill, and skip the black market exchange touts for a proper exchange office. Fans of raw, local heavy music will love it. Anyone needing polish and comfort won’t.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #15 festival in Cuba
What makes this festival worth celebrating

Ciudad Metal Festival pulls backpackers because it puts you inside a scene most travelers never see. Cuban bands play alongside metalheads from across the island, many of whom travel hours to get here, so conversations start easily over a shared bottle of rum. It also costs far less than a European metal festival, and tickets are modest by any standard. Santa Clara, home of the Che Guevara Mausoleum, fits neatly into a route between Havana and Trinidad, so you can add history and colonial streets on either side of the music. The local rock community is the real draw: hand-painted patches, homemade band shirts and fans who want to know where you’re from.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Local Cuban Metal Bands: The core of the festival is island-grown death, thrash and doom, played by bands that rehearse with limited gear and plenty of fury.
  2. The Crowd and Patch Culture: Fans arrive in hand-made band shirts and swap stories, patches and rum, and visitors are welcomed warmly.
  3. Visiting International Acts: Foreign bands occasionally join the bill, which draws a bigger crowd and gives the island scene a rare outside link.
  4. Mosh Pit Energy: The pit is loud, friendly and fast, with people helping each other up as quickly as they fall.
  5. Che Guevara Mausoleum: Just a short ride from the venue, this monument and museum holds Che’s remains and gives your trip some history between sets.
Ciudad Metal Festival pairs well with the Che Guevara Mausoleum, which you can visit by day before heading to the evening sets.

🌤️ When to go?When is the celebration of Ciudad Metal Festival?

Ciudad Metal Festival runs about four days in late October or November, with its main stage in central Santa Clara (Parque Tristá); organizers set the dates each year, so confirm them before booking.
  • Best day: Go for the full run if you can. The opening night is relaxed, while the final nights bring the headline bands and the biggest crowds.
  • Weather: Expect 22 to 30°C (72 to 86°F), occasional showers and dark by early evening. Bring a light rain jacket, earplugs and closed shoes.
  • Booking: Reserve a room 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Prices rise roughly 20 to 40 percent.
  • Arrival: Arrive a day early, since trains and buses fill before the opening night and after the finale.
Leave the morning after the closing night, when transport is calmer.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Central Santa Clara, within a few blocks of Parque Vidal, is where I would stay, because you can walk to the music, food stalls, and the late-night gatherings without paying for taxis. Casas particulares here are the backbone of budget travel in Cuba: a private room runs about US$15 to 30, and hosts often share tips on shared taxis, safe routes home, and where fans meet before shows. Solo travelers get the most out of the streets around the main plaza, where other backpackers and local metalheads cluster and the evenings stay busy and well lit. Solo travelers get the most out of the streets around the main plaza, where other backpackers and local metalheads cluster and the evenings stay busy and well lit. The area near the Víazul bus station suits early departures, but it is quieter after dark. Book early, since rooms near the center sell out first when the festival is on.

🍲 FoodLocal Flavors for Backpackers

Festival food in Santa Clara is simple and filling, built around street stalls and nearby paladares serving pork sandwiches, fried plantain chips, and plates of rice, black beans, and roast pork. Try a cerdo asado plate if a stall has it hot off the grill, and grab a pizza slice from a window vendor for a cheap late-night bite.
For drinks, Cristal and Bucanero beer are the standard, poured cold into plastic cups or sold in cans, while rum comes in cheap shots or cocktails like a Cuba libre. Fresh guarapo (sugarcane juice) cools you off in the afternoon sun.
Pay in cash, in Cuban pesos or sometimes dollars, and carry small bills. Lines move slowly, so order a round for friends at once. Bring your own water bottle.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Ciudad Metal Festival works best as a stop between Havana and Trinidad, with a day or two spare in Santa Clara for the mausoleum and the train monument. I’d bring earplugs, cash in small bills and a patch from your own country to trade.

✈️ When did I visit Cuba?
As part of my 1.5 year travel around the world trip, I visited Cuba for 6 weeks in February, March 2016, being extremely lucky that that coincided with the free concert of The Rolling Stones.
