Backpacking in Camønoen
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people only realize on day two that Camønoen’s secret weapon is logistics: you can bail out almost anywhere and catch a bus back, so you’re never “trapped” in a thru-hike spiral. Camønoen loops around the islands of Møn, Bogø and Nyord in southeastern Denmark, a few hours by train and bus from Copenhagen, and it feels like Denmark’s answer to a long-distance coastal trail. You get white chalk cliffs at Møns Klint, quiet farm tracks, wind-hammered beaches, and sleepy villages with a single open café if you’re lucky. It’s long—around 175 km—but technically easy, more about endurance than skill, and the waymarking is decent rather than perfect. Compared with nearby routes like the Østersøruten or shorter coastal walks on Zealand, Camønoen feels wilder and more varied, but also more exposed to weather, boredom on some road sections, and limited cheap beds in peak season.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Camønoen

  • Møns Klint (the chalk cliffs) — sheer white cliffs plunging into the Baltic, with jaw-dropping panoramas you won’t find on most lowland Danish hikes. The exposed chalk layers make it a magnet for fossil hunters and photographers; the climb down the wooden stairs to the pebble beach feels dramatic in a way few Scandinavian trails do.
  • Liselund Park and the Romantic Pavilion — a tiny, perfectly kept 18th-century landscaped park with thatched cottages, a miniature “castle” and shaded paths tucked right behind the cliffs. It’s an almost storybook contrast to the raw coastline—great for a quiet picnic or to escape the wind for a while.

The village’s thatched houses and narrow lanes give you a real feeling of remoteness and excellent chances for close but respectful wildlife encounters.
  • Stege — medieval town and harbour — cobblestone streets, an intact town wall and a working harbour where you can refill supplies, sit for a coffee or eat fresh fish. It’s the cultural heart of the route and a pleasant human-scale contrast to the wild seascapes around Møn.
  • Fanefjord Church and its frescoes — a small medieval church decorated with remarkably preserved 13th-16th century frescoes from the Elmelunde school. Stepping inside feels like a time capsule—an unexpected slice of Danish cultural history right on the trail.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Weather: Spring and early autumn deliver the best trail conditions. Expect mild, often crisp air with less rain than the soggy winter months. Summer can bring warmth but also sudden showers, so pack smart.

  • Temperature: From May to September, temperatures hover between 12°C and 22°C (54°F to 72°F), perfect for long days on foot without overheating or freezing. Winter dips below freezing, making the trail slippery and less inviting.

  • Crowds: Peak summer draws more locals and tourists, especially on weekends. For a quieter, more solitary trek, aim for shoulder seasons like May or September when the trail breathes easier.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer festivals and coastal events add local flavor but can inflate prices and crowd campsites. Early autumn brings harvest celebrations with fewer tourists, offering a more authentic vibe.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in July and August. Booking in shoulder seasons often means better deals and more availability, letting you stretch your budget further.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail in late spring—when the wildflowers bloom, the air is fresh, and the trail feels like it’s waking up just for you.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

The Camønoen trail in Denmark is a delightful challenge, but it’s not without its quirks. Weather can shift unexpectedly, so pack layers. A sunny morning can morph into a chilly afternoon, especially near the coast.

The terrain is mostly forgiving, with well-marked paths, but watch your footing on the occasional rocky stretches. Navigation is straightforward, yet keep an eye on your map—some sections can feel repetitive, and it’s easy to zone out.

Wildlife encounters are rare, but if you spot a deer or a curious fox, keep your distance. They’re more scared of you than you are of them.

First-timers often underestimate the importance of pacing. Take breaks to soak in the views; they’re worth it. A cold beer at the end feels like a well-earned reward after a day of exploring. Embrace the rhythm of the trail, and let the journey unfold.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Camønoen is a breath of fresh air, where every step leads you through lush forests and along rugged coastlines. The real kicker? Those sweeping views of the Baltic Sea will make you feel alive. But here’s the catch: the trails can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Pack sturdy shoes and embrace the grit. The reward? A cold Danish beer at the end, savoring the journey you just conquered.
