Backpacking in Mols Bjerge Stien
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people hear “National Park” and picture big alpine drama; Mols Bjerge Stien is not that. It’s low, rolling, and quiet—but it works for its views. The trail winds through Mols Bjerge National Park on Djursland, in eastern Jutland, a couple of hours from Aarhus by bus and foot, so getting to the trailheads without a car is very doable, just not instant-gratification fast. Over roughly 60 km, you climb sandy ridges, cross open heath, duck into old beech forest, then pop out to wide Kattegat sea views that feel way bigger than the elevation you’ve earned. The upside: soft terrain, clear waymarking, and a wild-feeling landscape by Danish standards. The downside: long, exposed stretches in wind and rain, and scenery that’s subtle compared with the cliffy drama of places like Bornholm’s coastal paths. It’s a slow-burn hike, but the kind that sticks.

  1. Agri Bavnehøj — The highest natural point in the area (about 137 m) and the place for proper wide-sky views over Aarhus Bay, the islands and the serrated moraine hills. It’s where the island-like hills, dry grasslands and old stone fences make Denmark feel unexpectedly mountainous — brilliant for sunset and a coffee break with a view.
  2. Trehøje — A ridge crowned by three Bronze Age burial mounds that give you 360° panoramas across heath, pasture and sea. You get both archaeology and open ridge-walking here; in spring the slopes are scattered with wildflowers and orchids, and the light at dawn is unforgettable.
  3. Kalø Slotsruin (Kalø Castle Ruin) — A dramatic 14th-century ruin on a narrow spit, reached over a low causeway; it’s one of Denmark’s most photogenic medieval sites. The mix of crumbling

  3. Kalø Slotsruin (Kalø Castle Ruin) — A dramatic 14th-century ruin on a narrow spit, reached over a low causeway; it’s one of Denmark’s most photogenic medieval sites. The mix of crumbling walls, shallow waters and migrating birds makes it a perfect stop for photos, a picnic and a bit of history talk.
  4. Sletterhage & Helgenæs coastline — Raw, rocky coast and the Sletterhage lighthouse give a very different Danish seaside vibe: wind-swept cliffs, stony beaches, seabirds and a real chance of spotting porpoises offshore. The contrast to the inland heaths is dramatic — good for fossil hunting, seal-watching or just getting your boots muddy.
  5. Ebeltoft and Fregatten Jylland — A charming, timbered harbour town that makes a great start or finish to the hike. Wander cobbled streets, refuel at a café, and don’t miss Fregatten Jylland — the restored 19th-century wooden frigate — for a cultural hit after days of hiking.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer opens up local festivals and fresh markets in nearby towns, adding cultural flavor to your hike. Spring and autumn offer quieter trails and the chance to catch wildflowers or fall foliage without the buzz.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in July and August. Booking outside these months can save you a chunk of change and score you better spots at local inns or campsites.

Pro-tip: Start your hike in late May or early June to catch the long days, avoid the crowds, and enjoy a trail that feels both alive and spacious—perfect for soaking in every gritty, rewarding step.
