Backpacking in Dollerup Bakker
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

Your boots slide a little on the sandy slope, heather brushing your calves, wind pushing hard off the lake so it whistles in your ears. Below, Hald Sø flashes silver between crooked pines, and a skylark is going absolutely feral somewhere above you. This is Dollerup Bakker, a hilly pocket of heath and forest in central Jutland, just south of Viborg in Denmark. The main loop is short by mountain standards and never truly steep, but the constant up-down over loose sand and roots works your legs more than you expect. It’s easy to reach by bus from Viborg, which makes it a perfect half-day escape, though you’ll share the best viewpoints with families and dog walkers. Compared to flatter nearby routes, Dollerup actually feels like a “real” hike—small-scale drama, big payoff, zero logistics headache.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  • Ridge panoramas from the hilltops — Dollerup Bakker’s rolling moraine ridges give proper hill views in a country that’s mostly flat, so you get long sightlines over patchwork fields and valleys. Sunrise and evening light here are genuinely worth pausing for.
  • Hidden valley lakes and ponds — small, quiet water pockets sit tucked between the hills; they create mirror-like reflections, attract waterfowl and add a peaceful contrast to the climbs. Great spots for a snack and some wildlife-watching.
  • Visible glacial geology — the area’s hummocks, steep slopes and hollows are classic glacial moraine features, so the terrain feels more dramatic and varied than the average Danish trail. Good for anyone who notices how the land was shaped.

  • Mixed beech woods, heath and grazed slopes — the vegetation shifts as you walk: shady beech stands, open heather-covered ridges in late summer, and sheep- or cattle-grazed slopes. That changing scenery keeps the hike interesting and colourful through the seasons.
  • Birds, deer and quiet wildlife encounters — the mixture of woodland, scrub and water draws songbirds, woodpeckers and raptors, and you’ll often spot roe deer or hares if you move quietly. It’s more wildlife-rich and peaceful than busier coastal paths.
