Backpacking in Silkeruten
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 30, 2026

Most people only realize after day one that Silkeruten’s biggest perk is how often you can bail out or resupply; you’re rarely more than a short walk from a bus stop or a supermarket, which makes the whole thing feel daring but never risky. Silkeruten loops around Silkeborg in central Jutland, right in Denmark’s lake district, and it’s basically the country’s answer to a “real” multi-day trail without serious mountain pain. Expect rolling forest, sandy singletrack, lake views, and those low but relentless hills that quietly torch your legs. It’s long enough to fill several days, moderate in difficulty, and way easier to reach by train and bus than most Danish coastal routes. The downside: you’ll cross roads, see houses, and sometimes hear traffic. The upside: you finish a tough section and ten minutes later you’re drinking a cold beer in town.
