Backpacking in Vejlerne
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

The wind hits first: flat, open, and carrying the sharp calls of geese so loud you almost feel them in your chest. Your boots squelch on the damp track, reeds hissing on both sides, binoculars fogging as a marsh harrier tilts over the pools. This is Vejlerne, in North Jutland between Thisted and Fjerritslev, more bird sanctuary than classic “national park” playground. For backpackers, it’s peaceful, cheap, and visually spare: big skies, low horizons, serious birdlife, short and easy walking routes on dikes and gravel paths. No entrance fee, but also no real wilderness camping, limited shelters, and you’ll need wheels to get around. Compared with Thy National Park’s dunes and forest or Mols Bjerge’s hills, Vejlerne is quieter, flatter, and more specialized; come if you care about birds and calm, skip it if you want long, varied hikes or social campfire nights.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  • Massive goose roosts: In autumn and winter tens of thousands of pink-footed and other geese gather to feed and roost — the noise and movement alone are worth the trip. Go at dusk or dawn for the classic mass take-offs and landings.
  • Vast reed beds and marshland: Endless swathes of reeds, shallow channels and mudflats give Vejlerne its character. It’s a quiet, slightly otherworldly landscape that changes with the wind and light — great for slow exploration and noticing small changes.
  • Wader and duck concentrations: Large flocks of waders and dabbling ducks use the mudflats and shallow pools; look for lapwings, plovers, snipes and various teal and wigeon during migration. Bunches of birds flushed at once are a common, thrilling sight.

  • Raptor watching — marsh harrier and more: The open marsh is perfect hunting ground for marsh harriers and other birds of prey; white-tailed eagles and peregrines turn up on good days. Bring binoculars — you’ll often spot a silhouette cruising low over the reeds.
  • Observation towers and hides: Several towers and hides dot the reserve, giving panoramic views or close, sheltered vantage points for photography and birding. They’re easy to reach and make long waits for wildlife comfortable and productive.
  • Flat, easy walking and cycling routes: Trails and service roads are mostly flat — ideal for long, relaxed walks or cycling loops. Routes are well signed; pack water, a good pair of binoculars and insect repellent in summer.
  • Extraordinary light at sunrise and sunset: The low horizon over the flats creates dramatic color and reflection — perfect for landscape photos or just sitting and watching. Early mornings also increase your chance of seeing wildlife activity.
